NavIC- India’s own Navigation System can soon arrive in Xiaomi phones
The India Space Research Organization (ISRO) and most popular phone brand in India- Xiaomi are in advance stage of talks on the provision of chipsets that can support NavIC, India’s version of GPS (Global Positioning System). The Chinese mobile manufacturing company is likely to emerge as the first company to use chips supporting NavIC. It is expected to use the NavIC-friendly chipset that is being manufactured by the US chip manufacturer Qualcomm.
The Chipset is designed to provide accurate location information service to the users of India as well as the region extending to 1500 km from its boundary, which is its primary service area, the Indian Space Research Organization has stated earlier.
The ISRO official informed “Qualcomm has announced that its chip is going to have NavIC and they are releasing it soon. Xiaomi has almost agreed to have it and they might launch mobile phones with NavIC chipsets in coming days.
It is the operational name of the IRNSS (Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System). It was developed for aerial, terrestrial and marine navigation, disaster management, fleet management and vehicle tracking with mobile phones.

NavIC is expected to provide accuracy of better than 20 metres
NavIC will provide SPS (Standard Positioning System) to all users and Restricted Users (RS), which is an encrypted service for only authorized users. It is expected to provide accuracy of better than 20 metres across the primary service area.
The officials of ISRO informed that the international body 3GPP has formally approved usage of NavIC, allowing the ISRO to collaborate with US-based chipset company Qualcomm.
Currently, India uses America’s Global Positioning System (GPS) in all of their mobile phones for location purposes. With NavIC coming into scene India will be able to store and control the sensitive location data in India only which is currently stored in America.
