5th January will be a special day for West Bengal and TMC supporters as Mamata Banerjee will celebrate her 65th Birthday. Often referred to as the “Didi” of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee is a strong leader who is amongst the prime faces in opposition. Let’s look at some interesting facts about Mamata Banerjee on her birthday.

  1. Mamata Banerjee was born to Promileswar Banerjee and Gayatri Devi in Kolkata West Bengal to the Bengali Hindu family. She lost her father at the age of 15 due to a lack of treatment.
  2. She completed her Bachelors’s in History from the Jogmaya Devi College. Mamata also has a Masters’s degree in Islamic History from the University of Calcutta.
  1. Banerjee got involved in politics at the age of 15. Didi established the student Union wing of the Congress party “Chhatra Parishad.”
  1. She started her political career when she was in her teens in 1970. Mamata was appointed as the General Secretary of the state Mahila Congress in 1976.
  1. Banerjee became one of the youngest Indian parliamentarians in 1984, beating Somnath Chatterjee.
  1. In 1991, she became the Union Minister of State for Human Resources Development, Youth Affairs, and Sports and Women and Child Development.
  1. Didi left the Congress party in 1997 and started her own ‘All India Trinamool Congress’.

  1. Mamata allegedly held an MP, Daroga Prasad Saroj by the collar and dragged him out of the Lok Sabha to prevent him from protesting against the Women Reservation Bill.
  1. She joined the NDA government in 1997 and was given  Railway Ministry.
  1. Mamata Banerjee split with National Democratic Alliance in 2001, and later, returned in 2004. She then rejoined the United Progressive Alliance in 2009, and then split with them in 2012, eventually running her party independently.
  1. Mamata Didi became the first female Chief Minister of West Bengal in 2011.
  1. She was named in the list of ‘100 Most Influential People in the World’by Time Magazine in 2012.
  1. Bloomberg Magazine named her in the list of 50 most influential people in the world of finance in 2012.
