Baghdad: A tragic incident unfolded in the northern Iraqi town of Hamdaniyah as a fire broke out during a wedding event, resulting in a devastating loss of life and injuries. According to reports from state media and health officials, the fire claimed the lives of at least 100 people, with over 150 individuals sustaining injuries.

Health authorities in Nineveh province provided this grim assessment, with the official Iraq press agency INA confirming the “preliminary tally” of casualties, which was later corroborated by a spokesperson from the country’s health ministry.
Hospital Chaos in Hamdaniyah
The main hospital in Hamdaniyah, which is predominantly a Christian town located to the east of Mosul, witnessed a scene of chaos and tragedy. Ambulances rushed to the hospital with sirens blaring, and a crowd of people gathered in the courtyard to offer blood donations. Heart-wrenchingly, onlookers observed a refrigerated truck carrying numerous black body bags, underscoring the scale of the disaster.

Fire Traced to Flammable Panels
Initial reports from civil defence authorities shed light on a possible cause for the fire. They noted the presence of highly flammable prefabricated panels within the event hall, which did not meet safety standards. Moreover, the use of these inexpensive construction materials contributed to parts of the ceiling collapsing during the blaze. It was also suggested that the fire was triggered by the use of fireworks during the wedding, adding to the severity of the incident.
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of adhering to safety regulations and ensuring that appropriate precautions are taken during events to prevent such devastating accidents.
