Last week has been an absolute week of victory for India as women have been nailing it at the Tokyo Paralympics. Malala Yousafzia shares the story of when the Taliban hit her
Malala Yousafzai, a Pakistani activist, posted a photo of her operation two weeks ago. She also sent a statement regarding Afghanistan’s ongoing turmoil following the Taliban’s takeover. Malala took to social media to publish a photo of herself during her sixth operation. In that heartwarming post, she wrote how she is still healing from a gunshot wound she received years ago.
Gail Omvedt, the Dalit activist passed away
Dr Gail Omvedt, an American sociologist who dedicated her life studying India’s marginalised and tirelessly campaigned for their upliftment, died on Tuesday at the age of 81 at her home in Kasegaon, Maharashtra. She was born in Minneapolis and completed her schooling in the United States. Dr Omvedt gained Indian citizenship after her marriage to activist Bharat Patankar in the 1970s and has lived with his family in their Sangli hamlet ever since. Indumati Patankar, a prominent Communist leader and feminist activist, was her mother-in-law.
DU faced backlash on removing Mahasweta Devi, and two other Dalit Authors From English Syllabus
The Oversight Committee of Delhi University (DU) has been criticised for removing Mahasweta Devi’s short tale and the work of two other Dalit authors from the university’s English Syllabus. 15 Academic Council members issued a dissent letter against the OC and its workings during a meeting on Wednesday. The members of the committee said that the English Learning Outcomes Based Curriculum Framework (LOCF) curriculum for Semester V had been subjected to “extreme vandalism.”

Bhavina Patel wins silver
Bhavina Hasmukhbhai Patel, an Indian para-athlete, made history by being the first Indian to win a silver medal in a Paralympic final. In the finals of Women’s Singles Class 4, she defeated China’s, Zhou Ying. In wheelchair table tennis, this Gujarati player has created a name for herself. Bhavina Patel stated in an interview that she comes from a low-income family. Her father owns a tiny convenience store. Bhavinaben Patel, 34, is presently ranked No. 12 in the world and is coached by Lalan Doshi. She was also the first Indian paddler to qualify for the Paralympics finals.
Avani Lekhara wins gold
Avani Lekhara wins India’s first gold medal at the Paralympics. With a score of 249.6 points in the final event, the young shooter set a Paralympic record and tied the world record. Her spinal cord had been damaged in a vehicle accident in 2012. She has been confined to a wheelchair since then. She began shooting in 2015, inspired by former Olympic champion Abhinav Bindra and has since won several national and international titles.
