In a move to protect its user base and address emerging ethical concerns, the platform is taking a firm stand against the depiction of deceased minors or victims of well-documented violent events through the lens of artificial intelligence.

The revised anti-harassment and anti-cyberbullying policy explicitly prohibits content that “realistically simulates” the deaths or violence involving deceased minors or victims of notorious violent incidents. YouTube, with its implementation scheduled to begin on January 16, aims to filter out such content effectively. This move comes in response to disturbing reports of content creators exploiting AI to recreate and narrate tragic events involving missing or deceased children.
According to a recent investigation by The Washington Post, some content creators have been utilizing artificial intelligence to generate narratives surrounding the kidnapping and deaths of children, such as the infamous case of the two-year-old British child, James Bulger. The disturbing trend involves using AI to mimic the appearance of missing or deceased children and providing a simulated “voice” to recount their tragic stories, potentially causing distress to the victim’s families and the wider public.
Stricter Enforcement and Channel Termination
To ensure compliance, YouTube has outlined a clear enforcement mechanism. Any content found in violation of the new policy will be promptly removed, and creators will be notified via email. The platform also reserves the right to remove any links provided by creators if their safety cannot be confirmed. In a stern warning, YouTube declared that channels accumulating three strikes within 90 days will face termination.
