Realme XT Review: Realme XT’s 64 MP Camera can change the game

It is very difficult to describe how competitive the Indian Smartphone market is. Around 5 years ago when Xiaomi entered India, it sold a record 100 million units in the budget segment. Since then, Xiaomi has made quite a name in the subcontinent. Just when it seemed like Xiaomi is invincible, Realme emerged and started shaking things up in the budget segment. Take a look at Realme XT Review, is it 64 MP camera worth the wait?

Realme made it’s debut on May 2018, and since then, it has brought value for money offerings in each price segments. The intense fight between the Realme and Xiaomi has been mostly focused on the specs at lower prices. This has created a barrage of wonderful offerings in the Indian market. The recent fight was on who will bring the first 64MP camera phone.

Realme seems like winning the race by introducing Realme XT in India. Going by the name, you might think that Realme XT is the successor of Realme X, but it isn’t. This product lies somewhere between the Realme 5 Pro and Realme X. The starting price of the phone is Rs 15,999 and the main highlight is its 64 MP sensor. There is no competition for the phone currently as it is the first phone with 64 MP camera in the Indian Market.

Display and outlook

The phone looks a lot similar to the Realme 5 pro. The only difference is in the back panel as there is no diamond pattern. It has multi-coloured streaks at the back. It also has Gorilla Glass 5 at the back panel which doesn’t scratch easily. The body is built from polycarbonate but the silver paint gives it an aluminium appearance.

Realme XT sports a 6.4 inch Super AMOLED display with Full HD+ 1080 x 2340 resolution with Gorilla Glass 5 protection. With dewdrop notch at the top, it has in-display fingerprint sensor underneath. The face unlock feature works smoothly in both daylight and night (of course you need some light). It doesn’t have infrared so you might have to remove your sunglasses to unlock the device.

Realme Xt has a triple slot for two nano-SIM cards and an SD card. It has a C type charging port and the phone comes with a 20W VOOC 3.0 fast charger. The headphone jack is available. It also houses a Dolby Atmos capable loudspeaker.

Camera: A gamechanger

The camera layout at the back is little different from Realme me 5 series. The main sensor has been swapped with 64 MP sensor. An “AI Camera” text is written with symbols of four lenses engraved near the LED flash.

The camera performance is phenomenal and probably the best in the Realme budget series. It is the first phone that features Samsung’s GW1 image sensor. The Realme camera app on the phone lacks features as you cannot use the wide-angle camera or adjust the level of background blur in portrait mode. Autofocus is fast, HDR doesn’t disappoint and the 64 MP camera captures the detailed and pixel-binned shots. You can get a detailed picture even if you click a zoomed-in picture.

The selfie camera does a decent job with a 16 MP sensor. The beauty mode isn’t hostile. But again like the other Realme phones, front camera disappoints in low light. Video recording is excellent in Realme XT with 4K resolution at 30fps but lacks stabilization.

Software and specifications of Realme XT

The phone is powered by Snapdragon 712 SoC and is available in three variants – 4 GB RAM & 64 GB Internal Storage, 6 GB RAM & 64 GB Internal Storage, and 8GB RAM & 128 GB Internal Storage. Realme XT is priced at Rs 15,999, Rs 16,999 and 18,999 respectively. The operating system is ColourOS 6.0.1 based on Android 9 Pie with the security patch update of July. It has dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 ac, dual 4G VoLTE, Bluetooth 5, FM Radio, GPS and the usual suite of sensors.

Battery and Performance

The 4000 mAh battery lasts easily a day on average use. It will last almost a day and half in medium to low use. Battery drain isn’t a problem as you can charge it up to 46% in half an hour and 88 % in an hour. The performance of the phone isn’t different than the Realme 5 Pro. Android experience is decent, multi-tasking is quick and the app loading time is also speedy. Heavy games like PUBG run fine. PUBG will run at ‘High’ preset by default and the experience is smooth. The Dolby Atmos sound is from the bottom speaker is loud enough.

Conclusion

It is a solid addition in the Realme series and is probably a game-changer when it comes to the camera. In comparison to other Realme phones including Relame X, the camera performance is better in Realme XT. Now, the buyers have one more option in the budget segment phones.
