Here are some latest technologies that is transforming fashion one at a time

  • Seaweed Fabric

(Seaweed Fabric)

The problem with fast fashion is that it is really harmful for the environment. Sustainability is essential with more than 80% of textile going into waste or ending up in landfills. A pioneer in this field is the invention of sustainable seaweed fabric. Seaweed is available in abundance in the oceans. Moreover, fabric made from it has both environmental and health benefits. Surprisingly, seaweed fabric also provides for its nutrient benefits to be absorbed by the skin. The fabric is light, breezy and fashionable! Seaweed fabric is a major push towards the vision of using biodegradable fabric and controlling pollution from the fashion industry.

  • Vegan Leather

(Plant based vegan leather is the new jazz in town)

We all love a good and original leather product. But, do you know how harmful it is for the environment? The production of leather is catastrophic. It causes deforestation, biodiversity loss, greenhouse gas emission and eutrophication. This led people to look for alternative sources of making leather. Vegan leather can be made by using apple peels, pineapple, kelp or cork. These natural materials allow for an eco-friendly leather that does not harm the environment. Even though this technology is at a nascent stage, it shows a lot of promise. Vegan leather is the future.

  • E- commerce

It is not just the idea of sustainability that has seen technological innovations. The meagre fact that everything is accessible to us in seconds also plays a huge role. A lot of e-commerce giants have been built on the fashion industry. Today, we can shop for anything online and get it delivered to us in a matter of days. Online shopping has even made high end fashion available to all sections of society. Needless to say, the fashion revolution would not have been possible without the existence of e-commerce websites.

  • Renting and Thrifting

(Renting is now the smart way to shop)

We all have that extremely expensive designer wear that we wear only once in a while. Renting these not only allows for an extra income, but is also a sustainable practice. Renting out picked outfits from your wardrobe is a great way to extend the life of your products. This model allows people to wear a fancy outfit without having to actually invest it. A lot of applications and websites are now promoting the rental business. Even though this market is a little untapped right now, it does have a lot of potential. This practice can actually work with more cutting edge technology like AI (artificial intelligence).

The Thrifting Shops on Instagram are a Huge Hit

Thrifting is another practice that has become extremely popular nowadays. The main goal of thrifting is to stop the clothes from reaching the landfill. It also allows to reduce one’s carbon footprint. Thrifting is widespread on Instagram. Small stores are now letting people send and buy thrifted clothes with the click of a button. You will be amazed to see the treasures you will find while thrifting.

  • Nanotechnology

Nanotechnology is the technology of tomorrow

From being used in the agriculture sector to health, it also has a place in fashion. Incorporating nanoparticles into clothes is widely being practiced by some brands. Embedding silver nanoparticles in the clothes makes them resistant to bacterial fungi action. Moreover, this prevents odour from the fabric and extend their life. Nanoparticles of silica is also used in clothing to make it waterproof and stain resistant. The use of nanoparticles also extends to sun blocking, antistatic and other properties. Though the use of nanotechnology is not harmful to humans, its impact on the environment still needs to be studied in depth.

  • Artificial Intelligence

The use of AI in the field of fashion is versatile.

Just as AI is reshaping life as we know it, it is also causing an uproar in the fashion world. From advising people what to wear to intelligent manufacturing, AI can do a lot. Today, it is possible for users to try out how a product looks on them even before they buy it in virtual fitting rooms. With the help of AI, brands can also design more intelligently. They can use AI to assess if a product is stylish or not and to design clothes as well. Algorithms can also analyse the latest fashion trends and use that data to make trendy products. Fashion companies have now realised AI’s potential and are investing in them for a better chance at competition.
