BRICS Summit Delhi: Modi Govt Cuts VIP Convoys As Ministers, CMs Travel In One Bus To Ease Traffic Restrictions And VIP Movement Near Bharat Mandapam

The BRICS Summit Delhi arrangements have brought a notable change in the way senior Indian political leaders will travel to the venue. In an effort to reduce congestion and minimise disruption for ordinary commuters, the Modi government has reportedly decided to cut down on multiple VIP convoys during the summit.

Instead of ministers and chief ministers travelling separately in individual convoys, they are expected to use a common bus from Parliament to the summit venue. The move is aimed at reducing the number of vehicles on the roads and limiting the repeated stoppages normally associated with VIP movement.

The 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit is being held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi from September 11 to 13, bringing several international leaders and delegations to the capital.

Why The Common Bus Plan Matters

VIP convoys can require temporary traffic stoppages, police deployment and route clearance. When several political leaders travel separately, the number of security vehicles and the duration of traffic interruptions can increase.

The common-bus arrangement is therefore being viewed as an attempt to make VIP movement more streamlined. By grouping ministers and chief ministers together, authorities can potentially reduce the number of separate motorcades travelling through Delhi.

This approach is particularly significant during a major international summit, when the capital is already dealing with enhanced security requirements and the movement of foreign dignitaries.

The capital has introduced extensive Traffic Restrictions for the BRICS Summit. Delhi Traffic Police has identified 22 major diversion points and a network of more than 35 roads where movement could be regulated or diverted depending on VVIP movements.

The restrictions are particularly important around central Delhi, major VVIP routes and corridors connecting the airport, hotels and Bharat Mandapam.

Traffic conditions may change quickly when an international delegation or VVIP convoy moves through the city. Authorities have advised commuters to plan their journeys in advance and use public transport wherever possible.

VIP Movement Remains A Major Challenge

Even with fewer domestic convoys, VIP Movement remains one of the biggest factors affecting traffic management during the summit.

Foreign leaders and international delegations require secure routes between airports, hotels and the summit venue. Delhi Traffic Police has therefore prepared a detailed route-management plan covering key roads and intersections.

Reports indicate that traffic personnel will temporarily regulate roads when VVIP movements take place, with diversions implemented as required.

The objective is to ensure that security arrangements do not completely bring normal traffic to a standstill.

Narendra Modi Government Focuses On Minimising Disruption

The decision involving ministers and chief ministers reflects an effort to balance security requirements with the needs of Delhi residents. Narendra Modi and the central government face the challenge of hosting one of the year’s most important international diplomatic events while keeping inconvenience to the public under control.

Delhi is already accustomed to heavy traffic, but large-scale international events can create additional pressure on major roads. The use of a shared bus for domestic political leaders is therefore designed to reduce unnecessary duplication in official movement.

The measure could also send a broader message that VIP travel arrangements can be streamlined during major events when public movement is affected.

Bharat Mandapam At The Centre Of Security Arrangements

Bharat Mandapam at Pragati Maidan is the main venue for the BRICS Leaders’ Summit. With leaders from BRICS member countries attending, the area has been placed under extensive security arrangements.

Security preparations extend beyond the venue itself. Police and security agencies are monitoring VVIP routes, hotels, sensitive locations and important transportation corridors.

Delhi has deployed thousands of security and traffic personnel for the summit, while surveillance and traffic-control systems have been strengthened.

Delhi Commuters Advised To Plan Ahead

For residents, the biggest concern remains changing traffic conditions. The official advisory recommends that commuters allow additional travel time, follow traffic personnel’s instructions and use public transportation where possible. Metro services and other public transport options are expected to remain operational, although diversions may affect some road-based services during VVIP movement.
