Preeti Rathi Acid Attack Case: Death sentence for Ankur Panwar

In what can be seen as ‘justice served’, a special women’s court on Thursday sentenced Ankur Panwar to death for the murder of a Delhi girl, Preeti Rathi. On May 2, 2013 Ankur had hurled acid on Preeti at Mumbai’s Bandra Terminus. Preeti had come to Mumbai to work as a nurse with the Indian Navy.

The Special court had already convicted Ankur of murder on Tuesday and the decision on the quantum of sentence was being debated by the prosecutor and defendant.

Public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam sought capital punishment for Ankur Panwar and said that “the case fell in the rarest of rare category.” The decision of giving him a death sentence is a huge landmark in the Indian judicial system.
