Gold medal awarded to an Indian man, 47 years after exam

An Indian man 81-year-old has been awarded with a prestigious gold medal for topping the law exams which he sat nearly 50 years ago.

Ajit Singh Singhvi from Rajasthan was originally placed second in the awards list by the Rajasthan University in 1969.

But Singh did not lose hope, and he contested the result saying that he deserved the first place.

Ajit Singh received the medal on Thursday after a protracted legal battle and the delays the University.

The retired civil servant has told that, he is elated after getting his “much awaited medal”. But at the same time he wished that he would have got the medal much before.

He also added that he decided to file a case in 1969 because he felt that the university’s method of determining the topper was wrong.

The lower court gave the decision in his favour in the year 1975 and the university has also agreed that he topped the exams.

But the original topper of the examination Sawaj Singh, challenged the decision in a higher court and from there on the protracted legal battle had started.

Mr Singhvi’s long struggle lasted in the year 2003 when the Rajasthan high court has declared him as the “deserving” winner of the exams and Mr. Singh decided not to appeal further.

But the wait for the gold medal lasted only after 13 more years due to what the University said were “procedural delays”.
