Zaigham Murtaza’s ‘Policenama’ is a Must Read

Discussing ‘Policenama’ by Zaigham Murtaza

As we stood there waiting to get our hands on the copy of ‘Policenama’, we were told that the book was all sold out. And that’s how we know that Zaigham Murtaza has hit the homerun in his very first attempt.

On 4th March, 2023 at the New Delhi World Book Fair, the author along with a few esteemed journalists such as Asutosh had a small discussion on the book. Ashutosh commented on the book, saying, “If you read in between the lines, you will notice that the book is not just about the police, but also the interplay of police and media.” This interlinkage between the two helps decide what gets published and what does not.

Zaihgam Murtaza is a journalist who has been associated with Rajya Sabha Television, TV9, Hindustan Times and more. With more than 21 years of experience under his belt, the journalist is well-known for covering crime and political news. His political opinions and coverage have helped bring a different and unspoken truth into the limelight.

His first ever writing adventure ‘Policenama: Jahan Murde bhi Gawahi dete hain’ has been published by Rajpal & Sons, one of the most reputed publishing houses. The 108 years old publishing house also has books by best-selling authors such as APJ Abdul Kalam,Harivansh Rai Bachchan and more.

In Conversation with the Author

On being asked why he chose this topic in particular, he remarks “In the field of journalism there are two sets of people you interact with the most- police and politicians. My entry into the field was as that of a crime reporter. And being a crime reporter, I was always around the police. The book is not just about the flaws of police, but that of the media as well.”

“Being surrounded by such stories I strongly felt that we need police reforms. But, nobody was talking about the WHY. Reports by law commissions, Parliament always talked about the need to reform the police system in India, but the layman doesn’t know why we need these reforms. This book highlights why we need police reforms.” He also feels that the common man should know how to raise questions, and the ability to do so will come only when they know the ‘why’.

What he has very correctly observed is that the medium to reach the larger mass is through a story, and not through a report or an academic writing, and that’s why he did with his first book.

The most interesting selling point of the book is that all the 20 stories in the book come from Zaigham’s first hand experience. The stories are a result of his experience in the field. And you know that when a journalist decides to pen down the truth, a bestseller is created.
