A Guide to the whole process of becoming an ASI in CBI.

Corporate jobs may be yielding lots of jobs and desired money for many young people in the country but getting a job in CBI is still a matter of pride in the country. CBI stands for Central Bureau of Investigation. It is the main investigation agency of the country. CBI investigates and handles the intricate, high-profile, complex cases referred by government, state investigative agency, or various courts of the country. Most of the times CBI is asked to work on those cases which are not handled or investigated properly by other agencies.

CBI works as an independent agency free from the pressure of political bosses. The organization and the people associated with it are acquired with a good reputation and high esteem. To become an ASI in such agency is nothing sort of an achievement for middle-class aspirants. The task of ASI in CBI is not as easy as in other fields like state police and central security forces. A person has to deal with high profile personalities having connections with corrupt politicians and administration. That’s why it is called a challenging job as it requires courage to face powerful people.

If you aspire to be an ASI in the CBI then you have to go through a selection process of oral and written examination. The exams are conducted by the Staff Selection Commission so that only competent ones amongst many aspirants can be selected.

Eligibility criteria for becoming an ASI in CBI

1. Education Qualification: You must be a graduate or have a Bachelors Degree of any stream from a UGC recognized university.

2. Age: The candidate should not be less than 20 years of age on 1^st July of the examination year. He should also not be more than 27 years of age on the same date. There is an upper age limit of 5 years for SC/ST candidates and 3 years for OBC candidates. The upper age limit for certain categories of employees working in the Defense Services or in Government of India is also relaxed.

3. Physical Requirements

Chest: The chest must be 76cms with expansion for male candidates. There are no such requirements in the case of female candidates.

Height: The required height for a male is 165 cms. The required height for a female is 150 cms. 5 cms of height is relaxed for Hillsmen and Tribals.

Vision: Eye-Sight with or without glasses for distant vision is 6/6 in one eye and 6/9 in the other eye. For near vision, the eyesight should be 0.6 in one eye and 0.8 in the other eye.

You need to follow these steps to become an ASI in CBI

1. APPLICATION FORM You need to procure the ‘APPLICATION FORM’and other required information. Employment newspapers generally publish about it in the month of April every year. Fill the application form and send it to the regional centre as mentioned.

Note: To obtain the relevant details like syllabus and rules about the notification of the exam, you should refer to “Gazette of India”, “Employment News/Rozgar Samachar or other leading newspapers of the country.

2. Preliminary Exam: The aspirant has to take the “Preliminary Exams” consisting of two papers in the month of May or June. The two papers are based on Part A- General Intelligence & General Awareness and Part B- Arithmetic. Both the papers are of 2 hours and there are 100 questions of each mark worth.

Note: This is mere a qualifying exam for the final exam. The numbers obtained in this exam are not counted in the final exam.

3. Main Examination: If you qualify in the “Preliminary Exam”, you will have to take the final exam. There will be two parts of the final exam. Part A will be a written exam and Part B will be a personality test.

Subjects for written exams are English, Arithmetic, General Studies, General Awareness, Communication Skill & Writing, and Language. Arithmetic will be of 200 marks while others examination will be of 100 marks.

4. Personality Test: Once you clear the main examination, you will have to appear in an interview. The interview is conducted to know the personality and mental ability of the candidate.

Job Description of ASI

As earlier written, the candidate should be hardworking, brave, honest as well as tactful to deal with many high profile people. Sometimes, even your own boss might favour the opponent by using his/her influence in high echelons to save himself/herself. The CBI ASI can reach up to the rank of DSP and above with the time.

Salary Remuneration

The pay scale of Rs. 5,500-9,000 is set for the ASI in CBI. The Indian government has surfaced fixed salary grades for their employees; however, it keeps on changing with the new pay commission.

Note: Above mentioned pay scale is provided to give you an idea. Different branches pay different salaries. Salaries in personnel of the same branches may vary as salary is decided as per the responsibility, the person is holding and the area of posting sometimes. Various allowances like City Compensatory allowance, Dearness Allowance, Medical, Subsidized Housing, and Leave Travel Allowance are other perks of becoming an ASI.
