#BiWeek is trending: 5 Documentaries on LGBTQ that are a must watch

Every year 16 to 23 September is celebrated as Bisexual Awareness Week. This week culminates with the celebration of Bisexuality+ Day i.e. on 23rd September. This day was co-founded by GLAAD to increase the acceptance of the Bi+ Community that includes the Pansexual, fluid, no label, queer etc.) The #BiWeek promotes the history, culture, policies and priorities of the bi+ community. Here is a list of 5 Documentaries on LGBTQ that are a must-watch.

What is Bisexuality?

Robyn Ochs, a Bi advocate and Author defines bisexuality as –

“the potential to be attracted – romantically and/or sexually – to people of more than one sex and/or gender, not necessarily at the same time, not necessarily in the same way, and not necessarily to the same degree.”

The construct of bisexuality can appear a little confusing to you at first. It is basically the capacity of being attracted to people of any gender and hence they choose other words to explain this tendency such as bisexual, pan/poly-sexual, omnisexual, fluid or the queer.

So, in the light of #BiWeek and #Pride, we would like to share the 5 best documentary films, one should watch to know more about the concept of LGBTQ Community

1. Bi The Way

It is a feature-length documentary by Brittany Blockman and Josephine Decker. The two guys went in search of people who are challenging established assumptions for the assumptions around the bisexual community. It considers the opinion of biologists, psychologists, anthropologists and everyday people.

2. Gayby Baby

It is a story of kids who are being raised by a same-sex couple. They are growing in numbers worldwide. It talks about sensitive questions like who are in a Gayby-Boom, who are these kids? What do they think about having same-sex parents? Are they facing any different issue as compared to other kids? The global marriage equality movement, questions like these have become more pertinent than ever. Gayby Baby is an intimate and sometimes humorous account of four children and their families as seen from the perspective of a kid.

3. Mala Mala

Mala Mala was a documentary shot in 2014. It is a Puerto Rican’s documentary by Antonio Santini and Dan Sickles. This film is more like an umbrella film for the whole LGBTQ community. In this film, a range of trans identities and experience were represented.

4. Outrage

Outrage, directed by Kirby Dick is an incitement of clandestine hypocrisy of several closeted homosexuals in Washington DC. The representation is quite shocking and passionate. The people who were under scrutiny were the policymakers who had a displaying idea. They worked to decrease the population of LGBTQ while hiding their own identities. Kirby also hit this discussion of media’s role in spreading the word on gender neutrality. It speaks about how sexual orientation is independent of a person’s persona.

5. Before You Know It

The movie, Before You Know It is a docu-drama. It will appear more like a senior citizen. But it is of no ordinary senior citizens but of bar-hoppers, love struck activists, troublemaking baton twirlers, late night Internet cruisers, seasoned renegades and bold adventurers. It is. Story of lesbian, gay and bisexual Americans who make a population of 2.4 million of America at that time.
