Acne or pimples is one of the most psychologically distressing common problems all of us have faced at some point in time.

Thankfully, it is restricted to the face in most people, but in some, we do get it on the back, chest, shoulders, buttocks, and thigh. They have a large surface area to spread except for palm and soles, which do not have any oil glands.

For instance, your back is just like your face. It secretes an oily substance called sebum that triggers Back Acne, along with a poor diet, medication, hormones, sweat, and stress.

Body acne is seen more commonly in males. Still, it is also seen in females who have associated hormonal problems, especially PCOS.

Causes of body acne

PCOS: The increased levels of male hormone testosterone are seen even in females, especially if they have PCOS. This results in increased sensitivity or overactivity of the oil gland, which produces a lot of oil and tends to get blocked.

Post waxing acne: A lot of people get body acne when they wax their bodies. These angry, red zits pop out 5-7 days after the waxing.

Frictional acne:

This is seen primarily on your shoulders when you carry heavy school bags and backpacks. At the sides of friction, you will get frictional acne.

When you wear tight-fitted clothes, especially tight-fitted jeans, you will see acne on the buttocks or thigh area.

Myths:

Many youngsters are told by their elders not to treat it as if it will go by itself. However, Dr. Bindu Sthalekar says that only a few miles of acne can go away by themselves. While others require treatment.

Untreated acne leaves you with post-inflammatory hyperpigmented spots, residual acne scarring, or desi language khaddas.

This can be very debilitating.

Precautions: Treatment of acne depends on the cause.

  • If it is because of friction, stop wearing tight-fitted clothes. Avoid carrying heavy backpacks.
  • If the cause is waxing, try alternatives, say laser hair removal.
  • If it is because of a hormonal problem, it would need long-term treatment.
  • Acne and pimples do get worse with stress. So, learn to relax. Exercise and yoga can help you through.
  • Avoid anything that comes in a packet.
  • Go back to your mother’s recipes.
  • Do not sit in wet clothes or in sweaty clothes. Head to the shower and change into cotton, breathable garments.

Dip a napkin in warm water to clean your back. Mix apple cider vinegar and warm water in a cup. Adding 2-3 drops of tea tree oil to a cotton pad or spray bottle will prevent skin irritation.
