Virat Kohli Ends Test Career After 14 Years; Cites Personal Reasons

A famous luminary of modern-day cricket, in the form of Virat Kohli, has officially stated that he is retiring from test cricket thus bringing a very successful 14-year playing spell in the longest format of cricket to an end. With Rohit Sharma, his compatriot and former captain, announcing his retirement from Test cricket quite recently, Virat Kohli, 36, decided on his own, signaling a significant development in Indian cricket.

Known for his bold batting style, superior fitness and dedicated zeal for the game, Kohli burst onto Test cricket stage in 2011 against the West Indies. Kohli had reached a landmark of 30 centuries and 3 stars after scoring 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85 in 123 Test matches. Kohli is still fourth on India’s all-time list of top run scorers in Tests after emulating the touchstones of the greats like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and Sunil. His unbeaten 254 against South Africa in 2019 is an example of his expertise at controlling matches.

Kohli’s successes go beyond his batting since as a captain he has made a mark himself. At 40 successful Test matches and 68 captaincies, he is the highest number of successful Test captain in the history of Indian cricket. India’s landmark achievements during his captainship include winning their first-ever test series in Australia in 2018-2019 and 11 straight wins domestically. His captaincy gave India a marvelous Test win streak in South Africa, which showcased his relentless desire to win anywhere.

The skills of Kohli, although not Kohli’s retirement before India begin their five-match Test series in England seals a landmark period of Indian cricket.
In a tearful post on social media, Kohli thanked Test cricket for all the experiences it has given him.

He reflected on the difficulties, the lessons learned, and how personally attached he felt to the format. Kohli noted that there was nothing easy about it, but it felt right, and he is grateful for the game and everyone who supported him during his Test career.

Kohli’s retirement from Test cricket also means that he is the first of the famous quartet of “Fab Four” – alongside Joe Root, Steve Smith and Kane Williamson – to retire from the Test format. Kohli retired from T20 Internationals after India’s T20 World Cup victory in 2024, but he still will be involved with One Day Internationals where he has a remarkable record with 51 centuries, which is a record in itself.
The loss of Virat Kohli to Test cricket will be a loss with a huge hole to fill. The passion, intensity and world class batting he produced will be gone. However, his remarkable success and contribution to the game will not be lost for generations of cricketers and fans in India and around the world. Kohli’s contribution to Test cricket being fun and valued at a time when the format has struggled will often be reflected upon as a significant feature in his incredible career.
