Here are five fake news from the week you should not miss

From Kashmir Files winning Dadasaheb Phalke Award to Mehbooba Mufti offering milk to a deity, here are five fake news from the week you should not miss.

1. ‘Kashmir Files won Dadasaheb Phalke Award!

Kisne feka: On 21 February 2023, The Kashmir Files’ director, Vivek Agnihotri, took to Twitter to announce that the controversial film had won Dadasaheb International Film Festival 2023 award under the ‘Best Film’ award category. The announcement left netizens baffled regarding the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award.

Foolproof: Dada Saheb Phalke International Film Festival was founded in 2012 and established in 2016 to carry forward the Late Shri Dhundiraj Govind Phalke legacy, lovingly known as Dadasaheb Phalke – The Father of Indian Cinema, the website notes.

In contrast, Dadasaheb Phalke Award was Instituted in 1969 when presented to Devika Rani. The Government of India introduced the Dadasaheb Phalke Award to commemorate Dadasaheb Phalke’s contribution to Indian cinema who directed India’s first full-length feature film, Raja Harishchandra in 1913.

2. Punjab government likely to monitor their employee’s social media accounts

Fake news: It has been widely reported that Punjab government employees’ social media accounts are being monitored for posts that are critical of the government or its policies. According to the post, the Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann-led Aam Aadmi Party issued the notification for its employees.

Truth dose: Punjab’s AAP government did not issue any circular regarding the social media activity of its employees. The image is of the direction the Jammu and Kashmir administration gave.

3. Extremists targeted Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore’s statue

Kisne feka: The images showing a defaced statue of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore are going viral across social media. The photo shows a damaged statue of the Bengali poet, with the claim that “extremists” defaced it in Bangladesh.

Foolproof: The viral claim is false. A report by New Age Bangladesh was published on 17 February 2023. The report notes that the statue was removed on 16 February 2023. As reported by the New Age Bangladesh, Dhaka University authorities removed a sculpture of Rabindranath Tagore that had been installed in protest of recent censorship and alleged repression by university students near the Raju Memorial Sculpture, which is dedicated to anti-terrorism.

4. Videos of the under-construction pillar of Delhi Metro collapsing in Najafgarh

Fake news: A video of a collapsed bridge is going viral on social media. While sharing this video, social media users targeted Delhi’s CM, Arvind Kejriwal. They spread that an under-construction pillar of Delhi Metro collapsed in Delhi’s Najafgarh claiming many people’s lives and leaving several others injured. It said in Delhi’s Haiderpur Badli, a piece of shuttering from an under-construction Metro pillar fell on a nearby vehicle.

Truth dose: It is actually a data of Varanasi flyover accident case of 2018 where a portion of a flyover collapsed, leading to the death of 19 people. There is no connection between it and the recent incident at the Delhi Metro. Hence, the viral claim is false.

5. Mehbooba Mufti is offering milk to a deity!

Kise feka: On social media, a newspaper clipping shows Mehbooba Mufti offering milk to a deity. The report’s title reads, “Mehbooba offered prayer in the temple.” While sharing this image, people on social media claimed she offered prayer in the temple recently following the repeal of Article 370 from the former state of Jammu and Kashmir.

Foolproof: The viral photo is from 2016, before the revocation of Article 370 from the former state of Jammu & Kashmir. Mehbooba Mufti, the erstwhile CM of J&K, reached the Kheer Bhawani Temple in Srinagar on the occasion of the fair held at the temple. Hence the viral claim is False.
