Events of April: From Elon Musk taking over Twitter to Violence breaking out in several parts of India, April was too much to handle. Therefore, here are the five important events of April that remained the highlight of the month.

Jahangirpuri violence

On the evening of 16 April 2022 in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri, one civilian and eight police personnel were injured in the stone-pelting that ensued; one police personnel sustained a bullet injury.

A Hanuman Jayanti procession was being carried out in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri in police presence. Once the procession reached Kushal cinema hall. An argument broke out between the two communities after which things escalated and stone-pelting began from both sides.

Heavy police and paramilitary forces were deployed in violence-hit Jahangirpuri. Soon after, Bulldozers arrived for the anti-encroachment drive in the area. The drive was undertaken a day after Delhi BJP chief Adesh Gupta, wrote to the party-ruled North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC). He alleged that those accused of rioting in Jahangirpuri had built ‘illegal constructions in the area. He demanded that these be demolished using bulldozers. Thereafter, sent by the civic body rolled into the locality razing shops and other structures. However, the Supreme Court ordered a “status quo on the eviction drive in the area but bulldozers continued to knock down constructions.

Elon Musk took over Twitter

Elon Musk bought Twitter for roughly $44 billion, promising a more lenient touch to police content on the platform. He promotes his interests, attacks critics, and opines on social and economic issues to more than 83 million followers.

Musk said, “Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated.

Punjab violence

The situation tensed in parts of Patiala in Punjab after two groups clashed during an anti-Khalistan protest march. The police fired in the air to disperse the crowd. A curfew was imposed in the city after a few were injured in the clashes. Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann called the incident unfortunate and vowed his government would not let anyone create disturbance in the state.

Clashes broke out after the procession held by the group, which identifies itself as Shiv Sena, came face to face with a Sikh group that is believed to be pro-Khalistan. Members of the two groups also waved swords and threw stones at each other. A day after the clashes, mobile internet services were temporarily suspended.

JNU violence

A clash broke out between two groups of students in JNU, allegedly over non-vegetarian food being served in the hostel mess on Ram Navami. The JNUSU has alleged that the ABVP members stopped students from eating non-vegetarian food in the hostel mess and created a violent atmosphere. However, the ABVP denied the charge and claimed that “Leftists” obstructed a puja program organized at the hostel on Ram Navami.

Sri Lanka Economic crisis

With long lines for fuel, a short supply of essentials, and long hours of power cuts, the Sri Lankan public is reeling under its worst economic crisis. As the situation worsens, anti-government protests took place in the island nation, demanding solutions to the economic crisis.

A string of cabinet ministers and the central bank governor resigned in Lanka when protesters in the capital defied curfew orders. A continued increase in Inflation, declining foreign reserves, huge debts, and dependency on exports remains the major contributor to the situation.
