President of Delhi Mahila Congress Sharmistha Mukherjee lashed out top leadership for failure in Delhi

AAP defeated BJP and Congress to return in power for the third consecutive time by a huge margin in Delhi assembly election 2020. BJP increased their seat tally to 8 which was mere 3 in the 2015 assembly election. Congress was stable at getting nothing from the election from a place where it had a monopoly for three consecutive terms from 1998 to 2013. The vote percentage of Congress fell down to 4.26 per cent which was 9.65 per cent of the total vote share in the 2015 Assembly elections.

Congress was declared out of the race even before the election dates were announced. Running campaign solely based on the achievements of late Sheila Dikshit, former Chief Minister’s achievements had no impact on voters, who were determined to look ahead, not the past. Indian National Congress had very little to offer other than criticism of Bhartiya Janta Party and Aam Aadmi Party.

What lies ahead for Congress?

Congress will need to do more than analysis of the humiliating result, yet again in the Nation’s capital. Even the AICC (All India Congress Committee) spokesperson Sharmistha Mukherjee admitted when she said that it is the top leadership that has failed them. She also pointed out that inordinate delay in decision making at the top, lack of strategy and unity at the state level, no grassroots connect, demotivated workers have led to Congress’s demise in Delhi. In another tweet, she questioned P. Chidambaram that- has Congress outsourced the task of defeating BJP to state parties.

What should be done?

BJP and AAP heavily rely on their cadre to reach every single doorstep. Congress is facing a big crisis of party-cadre in Delhi. It needs an energized local leadership which can prepare the ground workers and can keep them connected. They also need fresh ideas and well-oiled campaign machinery of it they want to play a role in Delhi politics in the future.
