Cyclone Tej Update: Oman Prepares for Cyclone Tej as UAE Government Issues Safety Warning

Cyclone Tej update: Looming in the Arabian Sea, Cyclone Tej is on the verge of transforming into a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm (VSCS) before noon on Sunday. As this natural phenomenon approaches, the UAE government is urging its citizens to exercise caution and heed safety instructions.

On Sunday, October 22, the UAE embassy in Muscat, Oman, issued a warning, asking its citizens to closely follow safety guidelines provided by the Omani authorities. In case of emergencies, UAE citizens can reach out to the embassy via the emergency contact numbers 0097180024 or 0097180044444.

Oman, in anticipation of the extreme weather conditions and concerns for student safety, has made the decision to temporarily close both public and private schools until Tuesday, October 24.

Cyclone Tej, as it is known, is currently located over the Arabian Sea. It is anticipated to cross the region between Al Ghaidah, Yemen, and Salalah, Oman. The cyclone earned its name ‘Tej’ as part of the standard cyclone-naming convention followed by India.

Oman’s Meteorological Department has officially classified Cyclone Tej as a third-degree cyclone. It currently sits at approximately 500 kilometres from the Omani coast, with wind speeds around its centre ranging from 96 to 112 knots. The nearest rainy cloud mass is situated about 280 kilometres away in the Wilayat of Sadah.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts light to moderate rainfall, along with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over Kerala on October 23 and 24, and in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura on October 24. As Cyclone Tej gathers strength, it is crucial for residents and travellers to stay informed, take necessary precautions, and be prepared for the potential impact of this approaching cyclone.
