Kalkaji Gang-Rape Accused Was No Stranger To Park, Had Harassed Couples, Wielded Knife Earlier: What Delhi Police Probe Reveals About Aastha Kunj Park Security

The Delhi gang rape case involving a 17-year-old girl at Aastha Kunj Park near Kalkaji Mandir has raised serious questions about security and surveillance in one of South Delhi’s large green spaces. According to police, the girl had visited Kalkaji Mandir with a 17-year-old male friend on her birthday before entering the park on September 21, 2026. Three men allegedly approached them while posing as policemen, separated the girl from her friend and sexually assaulted her in a secluded section of the park.

The three arrested men have been identified by police as Asif, 30, and brothers Hemant Singh, 31, and Mukesh Singh, 24. Police said Asif was apprehended after an exchange of fire, while the two brothers were subsequently arrested from their residence.

Asif Was Reportedly Known Around The Park

Investigators are now examining information about Asif’s previous presence in Aastha Kunj Park. According to police, park employees, guards, nearby workers and regular visitors recognised him as someone who frequently visited the area.

A senior police officer told Hindustan Times that people had previously raised concerns about Asif allegedly carrying a knife and that police were also investigating allegations that the three men had harassed couples in the park. However, investigators said these concerns had apparently not resulted in formal police complaints.

Police are now trying to establish whether there were earlier incidents involving the accused that had not been formally reported. Investigators are also examining whether the accused may have used similar methods against other people visiting the park.

Knife And Firearm Recovered During Arrest

The investigation has also focused on weapons allegedly recovered from Asif. Police said an unlicensed firearm and a knife were found when he was arrested in Amar Colony following a brief exchange of fire. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the possession of these weapons and their possible relevance to the crime.

Police have also said that they recovered other material and are examining digital evidence from the accused’s phones. Some media was reportedly deleted, prompting investigators to send the devices for forensic examination. These findings remain part of an ongoing investigation and have not, by themselves, established whether the accused committed any earlier offences.

Security Questions Surround Aastha Kunj Park

The incident has brought park security at Aastha Kunj Park under renewed scrutiny. The park covers around 142 acres and contains large stretches of greenery and relatively secluded areas. Reports following the incident highlighted concerns about lighting, patrolling, CCTV coverage and access through multiple gates.

A Hindustan Times inspection found limited visible security at several entry points, while the Delhi Development Authority said the park has 27 guards working in three shifts. Officials have also pointed to the size and dense vegetation of the park as challenges for maintaining continuous surveillance across every section.

The contrasting accounts have placed attention on how security resources are deployed, particularly after sunset, when visibility becomes more limited.

Delhi Police Expands Investigation

The Delhi Police has used CCTV footage, technical information and statements from the girl and her friend to trace the suspects. Police said all three accused were arrested within roughly 12 hours of the reported incident.

Investigators are now looking beyond the immediate case. They are examining the accused’s movements around Aastha Kunj Park, phone records and other available evidence to determine whether there were previous incidents involving them.

Police have also added conspiracy-related provisions to the FIR as investigators examine whether the crime was planned. The investigation remains ongoing, and allegations against the accused will ultimately be tested through the legal process.

Lady Shri Ram College Raises Safety Concerns

The case has also affected the surrounding educational community. Lady Shri Ram College was among the institutions where concerns about women’s safety intensified following the incident. Delhi Police personnel were deployed outside the college, while reports said physical classes were shifted online temporarily amid heightened concern.

The college’s proximity to the park and the wider issue of safe movement around the area have added another dimension to discussions about security near educational institutions.

What The Case Reveals About Urban Park Safety

The Aastha Kunj incident has renewed discussion about how large public parks can be secured without restricting legitimate public use. Lighting, functioning CCTV cameras, visible patrolling, secure boundaries and mechanisms for reporting suspicious behaviour are among the issues receiving attention.

The allegations that Asif had previously been seen carrying a knife and that the men had allegedly harassed couples are particularly significant to investigators because they raise questions about whether warning signs were missed.
