Lady Shri Ram College Cancels Classes After Incident Near Campus
Lady Shri Ram College for Women (LSR) in New Delhi has suspended regular physical classes and shifted teaching online following an alleged rape of a 17-year-old girl at Aastha Kunj Park near Kalkaji Mandir. The incident, which took place on September 21, 2026, has raised concerns about the safety of students living, studying and travelling in the area. According to reports, LSR cancelled classes from Tuesday afternoon and decided to conduct classes online on Wednesday as a precautionary measure.
The decision came after police also encountered one of the accused near the college’s back gate. Reports said the police operation took place approximately 50 metres from the LSR campus, adding to concerns among students and staff about the security situation around the college.
What Happened Near Kalkaji Mandir?
According to police information reported by several news organisations, the 17-year-old girl had visited Kalkaji Mandir with a male friend before the two went to nearby Aastha Kunj Park. Police alleged that three men approached them and posed as police officers before separating the girl from her friend.
The girl was subsequently allegedly assaulted inside the park. An FIR was registered, and the investigation was initiated under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Three men were arrested in connection with the case, according to reports.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the allegations, and details emerging during an ongoing investigation should be understood as allegations unless established through the legal process.
Why Did LSR Cancel Physical Classes?
The administration of Lady Shri Ram College said student safety, security and well-being were the primary considerations behind the decision. Principal Kanika K Ahuja said the college cancelled classes after learning about the incident and also made faculty mentors and the college counsellor available for students who might need support.
The college also advised students, faculty members and staff not to gather near the back gate. LSR has been in contact with Delhi Police regarding security around the campus, while additional patrolling has been requested in lanes adjoining the college and nearby areas.
Police Encounter Near LSR Back Gate
The situation gained additional attention when police intercepted one of the accused close to the LSR campus. According to reports, the accused allegedly opened fire during the police operation, following which police fired in self-defence and the man sustained a gunshot injury to his leg. He was subsequently taken into custody.
The proximity of this encounter to the college prompted further precautions. Students were advised to avoid gathering around the back gate while security arrangements were being reviewed.
Security Concerns Around Aastha Kunj Park
The Kalkaji Rape Case has also brought attention to security conditions at Aastha Kunj Park. An India Today report citing investigators said the park had gaps including a lack of CCTV cameras at entry and exit points, poor lighting in some areas, unmanned gates and damaged sections of the boundary wall.

These findings have intensified discussions about public safety around educational institutions, parks, residential areas and routes used by students. For students at LSR, the issue is particularly significant because many travel through surrounding neighbourhoods or live in paying guest accommodation nearby.

The students’ union has called for attention to vulnerable stretches around educational institutions, including routes connecting campuses with Metro stations, bus stops, paying guest accommodations and markets.
Students have also discussed the need for measures such as better lighting, visible policing, safer last-mile transportation and improved emergency access.
