Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi and leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), recently expressed his gratitude to Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, prominent leaders of the Indian National Congress, for their support in the passage of the Delhi Services Bill. This legislation, which grants the Central government enhanced control over bureaucrats in the city, had sparked intense opposition from AAP and various other opposition parties.

In his letters to the Congress leaders, Kejriwal conveyed his appreciation for their party’s stance in rejecting and voting against the GNCTD (Amendment) Bill, 2023. He commended their dedication to upholding the principles of the Constitution, highlighting the significance of their support for the people of Delhi both within and outside the Parliament. Kejriwal acknowledged that this collaborative effort would be etched in history for its commitment to safeguarding the rights and autonomy of Delhi’s residents.

Despite the political rivalry that often characterizes their interactions, Kejriwal sought Congress’s backing in this critical matter. The bill managed to secure approval in both the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha, despite the Central government’s lack of a majority in the former. This was possible due to the support of parties such as the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP).

The bill’s passage and impending transformation into law after Presidential assent signify a substantial shift in administrative dynamics in Delhi. Kejriwal’s endeavor to rally opposition parties against the bill, his outreach to the Congress leaders, and the bill’s eventual clearance underscore the complexities and alliances that shape Indian politics.
