Akhilesh Yadav Promises Support to Arvind Kejriwal in a Press Conference

Samajwadi Party (SP) chief, Akhilesh Yadav, expressed his party’s unwavering support to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the face of the Centre’s ordinance concerning the control of services in the national capital. Yadav’s assurance came following a meeting with Kejriwal, as the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) continues its efforts to gather allies in opposition to the ordinance.

During a press conference held in Delhi, Yadav emphatically stated that his party would stand behind the AAP on this issue. Kejriwal, the national convener of the AAP, has been actively reaching out to leaders of non-BJP parties in order to gather support against the ordinance. The goal is to prevent the Centre from successfully replacing the ordinance with a Bill when it is presented in Parliament.

The Centre took the decision to promulgate the ordinance on May 19, with the aim of establishing an authority responsible for the transfer and posting of Group-A officers in Delhi. The AAP government condemned this move, claiming it was a betrayal of the Supreme Court’s ruling on the control of services. Prior to the Supreme Court’s verdict on May 11, all transfers and postings of Delhi government officers were under the executive control of the lieutenant governor, excluding police, public order, and land-related matters.

The ordinance was introduced just a week after the Supreme Court granted the elected government control over services in Delhi, except for the aforementioned areas. The ordinance seeks to establish a National Capital Civil Service Authority, which would oversee the transfer and disciplinary proceedings of Group-A officers from the DANICS cadre.

By extending his support to Kejriwal, Yadav and the SP join the ranks of opposition parties aiming to thwart the Centre’s ordinance. The move to create the National Capital Civil Service Authority through an ordinance has raised concerns among non-BJP leaders, who view it as an attempt to undermine the power of the elected government in Delhi. The Supreme Court’s ruling had been seen as a significant victory for the AAP, affirming its authority over the bureaucracy within the national capital.

With the support of the SP and other parties, Kejriwal hopes to build a formidable coalition against the Centre’s proposed legislation, which could potentially override the Supreme Court’s decision. The strength of this united front lies in its ability to present a strong resistance in Parliament, preventing the Bill from being passed. Kejriwal’s meetings with various political leaders reflect his determination to gather allies and protect the autonomy of the Delhi government.

Akhilesh Yadav’s announcement of the SP’s support for Arvind Kejriwal and the AAP’s opposition to the Centre’s ordinance marks a significant development in the ongoing battle over control of services in Delhi. As political alliances take shape and non-BJP parties rally against the proposed legislation, the future of the ordinance and the extent of the elected government’s power in Delhi hang in the balance.
