Decoding UP’s Nexus of Crime and Politics

Uttar Pradesh is famous for its notorious “Gunda Raaj”- every OTT show has depicted this UP’s nexus of Crime and Politics very well. It is not an unknown fact that the political scene in Uttar Pradesh is heavily polluted with crime.

What is UP’s Nexus of Crime and Politics? Have they ‘Criminalised Politics’ or ‘Politicised Crime’

Uttar Pradesh is famous for its notorious “Gunda Raaj”- every OTT show has depicted this UP’s nexus of Crime and Politics very well. It is not an unknown fact that the political scene in Uttar Pradesh is heavily polluted with crime. The relation goes both ways- politics is full of criminals and crime is used heavily in politics.

Many MLAs and MPs in the country have criminal records pending against them and yet they seem to have direct entry into the state legislature or the Parliament. Criminals have also actively interfered in politics and have been known to finance candidates, capture booths for them and use muscle power to make their candidate win. This ensures them a person in power who will always support them and be in their pockets.

Supreme Court has time and again made an effort to rectify this- they have issued guidelines to ensure that politics and crime do not go hand in hand. But, the lack of political will and inability to get some solid action has always prevailed. What do we do in a situation like this? The recent debacle in Uttar Pradesh regarding the shooting of Atiq Ahmed is an indication that this problem is not getting resolved anytime soon. Let us look at the Uttar Pradesh’s Nexus of Crime and Politics more closely.

  1. Atiq Ahmed was a politician and a well-known gangster. He had more than 160 criminal cases registered against him. He was convicted in 2019 for the assassination of his rival Raju Pal in 2005. He remained in jail until recently when he was assassinated by three gunmen when going for a medical checkup.
  2. Raghuraj Pratap Singh is another politician with a rich crime record. He was also accused of murdering an IPS officer. He has been in power since 1993 and is currently serving as an MLA. He is popularly called as Raja Bhaiya and continues to yield power even in Yogi’s era.
  3. Dhananjay Singh is another former MLA who has been often called a Purvanchal Bahubali politician and Mafia Don. He was found to have a hand in the murder of politician Ajit Singh. In 2021 he absconded from the police and there was a wide search for him until January 2022.

4. Mukhtar Ansari

Ansari is someone who could have a show on him as his journey has been fascinating. To be honest, all these bahubalis deserve a show.

Ansari won the assembly election five times- 1996, 2002, 2007, 2012, and 2017. The last three victories were when he was in jail. This alone speaks of his power and how even when sitting inside the jail he has the power to win elections.

He is currently lodged in Jail and his son had taken over his political legacy.

The current Yogi government might have made things a little better, but there is no black-and-white differentiation between crime and politics in UP. It is interesting to see how these scenarios will unfold in the coming years of BJP in power.
