Baba Bageshwar Apologises Over Lord Ram and Lord Krishna Remarks After Controversy

Religious leader and Bageshwar Dham head priest Dhirendra Shastri, popularly known as Baba Bageshwar, has apologised following a controversy over his remarks comparing Lord Ram and Lord Krishna. His comments, made during a religious programme in Madhya Pradesh, attracted criticism from devotees and several religious leaders after a video of his speech circulated widely on social media.

The controversy began when Shastri made comparisons between the appearances, postures and characteristics of the two highly revered Hindu deities during a Ram Katha programme in Karera, located in Shivpuri district of Madhya Pradesh. His remarks were criticised by devotees who felt that the comparison was inappropriate and could hurt religious sentiments.

Following the backlash, Dhirendra Shastri released a clarification, stating that he had no intention of disrespecting either deity or creating divisions among devotees.

What Did Baba Bageshwar Say About Lord Ram and Lord Krishna?

The controversy started after a video from Baba Bageshwar’s religious discourse went viral on social media. During the programme, he compared the traditional appearance and posture of Lord Krishna with that of Lord Ram.

While describing Lord Krishna, Shastri referred to his distinctive three-bend posture, known as Tribhanga, in which the feet, waist and neck are positioned in a curved manner while playing the flute.

He contrasted this with Lord Ram’s traditionally depicted straight and upright posture. During his speech, he also compared Ayodhya, associated with Lord Ram, with Vrindavan, which holds a special place in the devotional tradition of Lord Krishna.

His remarks included comparisons between Lord Krishna’s flute and Lord Ram’s bow. These statements were perceived by several viewers as placing one deity above the other.

The video quickly attracted attention, with many social media users questioning the language used during the religious discourse.

Why Did Dhirendra Shastri Face Backlash?

Baba Bageshwar’s comments triggered criticism from devotees, particularly followers of Lord Krishna in Mathura and Vrindavan.

Several religious figures and devotees expressed disappointment, arguing that Lord Ram and Lord Krishna hold equally important positions in Hindu religious traditions. Both are widely worshipped as incarnations of Lord Vishnu.

Critics maintained that comparing the two deities in a manner that appeared to favour one over the other was inappropriate, especially during a religious gathering.

Many people also expressed concern that such statements could create unnecessary differences among followers of Hinduism.

The controversy soon extended beyond social media. Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav also criticised the alleged remarks without directly naming Shastri. He described the comments as unfortunate and objectionable and called for action.

Baba Bageshwar Issues Clarification and Apologises

Amid growing criticism, Dhirendra Shastri released a video message explaining the context of his remarks. He stated that his comments had been misunderstood and that his intention was never to create differences between Lord Ram and Lord Krishna.

He explained that the statements were made in a playful and devotional context, drawing inspiration from traditional expressions used by saints and devotees in Braj.

Shastri also referred to the devotional traditions in which the gopis expressed their affectionate complaints towards Lord Krishna. According to him, such expressions are part of a particular style of devotion and should not be interpreted as disrespect.

He clarified that he himself is a devotee of Lord Krishna and has deep faith in the traditions of Braj.

He also mentioned his association with the Shrimad Bhagwat Katha and his support for the Krishna Janmabhoomi cause.

Despite explaining his intention, Shastri acknowledged that his words may have hurt the feelings of devotees. He expressed regret and offered a humble apology to anyone who felt offended by his remarks.

Lord Ram and Lord Krishna: Importance in Hinduism

Lord Ram and Lord Krishna are among the most widely worshipped deities in Hinduism. Both are regarded as avatars of Lord Vishnu and represent different aspects of divine teachings, righteousness and devotion.

Lord Ram is popularly remembered as Maryada Purushottam, representing discipline, truth, duty and ideal conduct. His life story, narrated in the Ramayana, continues to inspire millions of devotees.

Lord Krishna, on the other hand, is celebrated for his wisdom, divine teachings, playful childhood stories and the message of the Bhagavad Gita. His teachings focus on duty, devotion, knowledge and the importance of performing one’s responsibilities.

Mathura and Vrindavan are particularly significant pilgrimage destinations associated with Lord Krishna, while Ayodhya holds immense religious importance for devotees of Lord Ram.

For millions of followers, both deities represent different expressions of the same divine power.
