Sonam Allegedly Paid ₹20 Lakh to Kill Husband Raja Raghuvanshi During Honeymoon, Police Arrest 5 Accused in Shocking Murder Case
The chilling undo is that the honeymoon had turned into a frightful crime for the very newly-weds Sonam and Raja Raghuvanshi, the news of which has sent waves of shock through the nation. Multiple reports suggest Sonam, the main accused, allegedly contracted her husband’s murder by paying hitmen perhaps up to ₹20 lakh, some of which she had allegedly paid even in advance.
Sonam Raghuvanshi and Raja got married in Indore on May 11, flying off to Meghalaya for their honeymoon on May 20. According to Raja’s family, the last they heard from the couple was May 23. The following day the couple’s hired scooter was located abandoned, leading to a police investigation. By June 2, Raja’s decomposed body was found buried deep within a gorge. His belongings, especially a gold chain and a ring, were suspiciously found missing.
Initial investigations revealed that Sonam had offered ₹4 lakh for the murder but later raised the offer to ₹20 lakh. It was reported that she paid ₹15,000 cash in advance to the accused upon hiring him. However, payment details are yet to be officially authenticated by the police.

The preliminary investigation showed that Sonam and her hired killers had met in Bangalore just before boarding a flight together to Meghalaya. The circumstances surrounding the group’s travel to the scene of the crime have raised eyebrows aplenty. As investigations proceeded, the suspicions on Sonam became stronge. After a search that kept her out of reach for several days, on June 9, she was located at a small food joint in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh. A witness among the staff said Sonam was in distress and crying, asking for a phone to call her relative.
From there, Sonam allegedly surrendered and has since been arrested together with three others, two of whom are Akash Rajput (19) and Vishal Singh Chauhan (22), the third being Anand Kurmi. Another person, Raj Kushwaha, allegedly Sonam’s lover, was apprehended in Madhya Pradesh. Investigators believe that Sonam and Raj Kushwaha together conspired to eliminate Raj, with the other three aiding in execution.
As for Raja’s family, Raj Kushwaha was seen at their residence in Indore after the arrival of the body. This further cemented suspicions against him. Some reports indicate that the three assembled men arrested were not professional contract killers, but friends of Raj Kushwaha who may have been persuaded to commit the murder on his behalf.
Sonam is presently under a 72-hour transit remand with the Meghalaya Police. Shocking betrayal amidst intense planning has attracted media attention to the case. Raja Raghuvanshi’s grieving family has demanded the maximum possible punishment for the accused and is asking for justice for their deceased child and a complete inquiry into the conspiracy.
