Delhi and Punjab are Under a Heatwave Red Alert and Telangana and Karnataka will be Hit by Monsoon Rains Today

Indian Government Issues Heatwave Red Alert for Delhi and Punjab Amid Soaring Temperatures

While Heatwave Grips the North, Telangana and Karnataka Gear Up for Monsoon Rains

On Wednesday the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert due to the severe heatwave that was still affecting Delhi. In the city mercury levels varied from 40 to 45 degrees Celsius while the heat index – a metric that combines temperature and humidity – rose to an incredible 51 degrees Celsius.

However according to the IMDs most recent forecast there should be some relief in northwest India beginning on June 14.

A slow drop in temperatures is anticipated starting in mid-June, the weather service said even though extreme heatwave conditions persisted in places like West Rajasthan and the surrounding areas.

There won’t be any major changes to the maximum temperatures over East India over the next 24 hours but they will gradually drop by 2-3°C over the next three days. Over the rest of the country there shouldn’t be any notable changes in the highest temperatures the IMD wrote on X.

After June 13 Delhi is Expected to Feel Better

According to an IMD official a western disturbance may be the cause of the temperature drop that is anticipated after Friday.

Until Thursday the extreme heat is predicted to continue. According to Naresh Kumar, a senior IMD scientist a western disturbance is expected to impact northwest India starting on the evening of June 13. This could result in mild rain and thunderstorms in Delhi according to PTI.

As of 5:30 pm Ayanagar had the highest temperature in the nation’s capital at 45°C followed by Palam (44°C) Ridge (43°C) Pitampura (43°C) Lodi Road (43°C) Safdarjung (43°C) and Mayur Vihar (40°C).

Forecasters say that although the Delhi heat wave alert is still in effect today the weather may start to improve on Friday night.

Meanwhile, according to real-time data from the State Load Dispatch Centre (SLDC) Delhi experienced its highest summertime peak power demand on Wednesday at 8231 MW at 10:55 p.m. reported.

On June 12–13 Punjab was Placed Under Red Alert

With dry weather predominating and temperatures staying well above average Punjab was still suffering from extreme heat.

The IMD responded by warning people to take precautions against heat-related illnesses and issuing a red alert for June 12 and 13.

Until June 13 heat wave to severe heat wave conditions are likely to continue over northwest India including the western Himalayan region and then decrease, the weather department’s bulletin said.

Several parts of southern India are expected to see rainy weather in contrast to the heatwave in the north.

In 10 Districts Telangana is Prepared for Significant Rainfall

10 Telangana districts are under a heavy rainfall alert for June 12 from the IMD. Adilabad Kumaram Bheem Asifabad Jagtial Vikarabad Sangareddy Mahabubnagar Nagarkurnool Wanaparthy Narayanpet and Jogulamba Gadwal are among the districts designated as being on alert.
