Study was conducted on mice

For the study, the researchers have taken a mice which was given a two-week stay in a large cage packed with toys and some exciting environment and this appeared to boost their white blood cells, which fight off infections.

“This effect is remarkable because we have not given them any drugs, all we have done is change their housing conditions,” said Fulvio D’Acquisto, Professor at Queen Mary University, London.

“You could say that we have just put them in their equivalent of a holiday resort for about two weeks and let them enjoy their new surroundings,” D’Acquisto added.

White blood cells are the key to auto-immune diseases such as the rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis.

The researcher has also suggested that prescribing a holiday could help the sick recover more quickly and even give worn-out office workers a new lease of life.

“We could further boost the effects of the standard drug treatments that would deal with the mechanics of infection, by also offering something the environmental that improves a patient’s more general well-being. That could be further a promising approach in order to treat chronic diseases,” D’Acquisto said.

Just as sleep is necessary for our body similarly holidays are important for relaxation and change – they provide relief from the monotony of our daily routine. They are important for our mental and emotional well being.

They are not only meant for enjoying but also for pursuing our hobbies and interests. During holidays we can live our life as we want.

The study has been published in the journal Frontiers in Immunology.
