International Safe Abortion Day 2018: It is your right


International Safe Abortion Day is celebrated every year on September 28.  The theme of International Safe Abortion 2018 is  -‘Normalising abortion’

because it is a part of life.  A lot of women all across the world do not have access to safe abortion. International Safe Abortion day is celebrated to promote safe and legal abortion. Abortion is a part of life and it is not wrong. A woman can decide when she wants a baby.

Notably, the day was celebrated as a day of action for the decriminalization of abortion in  Latin America and the Carribean in 1990. In the year 2011, the women’s  Global network for Reproductive rights 28 September as an International Safe Abortion Day.

According to a study by the World Health Organisation, 25 million unsafe abortions occurred between 2010 to 2014. The majority of these unsafe abortions held in developing countries.  Data in India is shocking. Here are a few important things that you need to understand about Abortion. Let us take a look

1. Its Legal

Yes, it is legal in India.  The Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971, is responsible for the legalization of abortion in India. However, legally, it can only be performed up to 20 weeks of conception.

2. First Trimester is important

A woman can access her right but she has to seek her doctor’s permission. Also, if the abortion takes place within the first trimester, the woman needs only one doctor. However, if she crosses 12 weeks she might require 2 doctors for safe abortion

3. Right to Privacy

Its a woman’s choice whether to keep the child or to abort her pregnancy but all this should be done in the realm of privacy.

4.  Adults do not need to seek permission from their husband or family

Yes, the doctor only asks the mother. It’s a choice of the mother so doesn’t need anybody’s else consent.
