A scientist, engineer, and politician, Dr. APJ Adbul Kalam was hands down one of the most revered and amazing men in Indian history. 

He was the 11th President of India and was also a renowned scientist. He was born on 15th October 1931 in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu. He passed away on July 27, 2015, but is still celebrated as one of the greatest men in India. He was also a prolific writer and has written on several topics. The most acclaimed book by him is his autobiography titled “Wings of Fire.”

Why is he known as ‘The Missile Man of India’?

Dr. Kalam is known as the Missile Man of India for his contribution to helping India develop the Prithvi and Agni missiles. Both these were indigenous guided missiles that could not have been possible without him. 

He was also the Chief Scientific Adviser to the Prime Minister and Secretary of the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) from July 1992 to December 1999. 

Pokhran- II Nuclear Testing 

He also played a major role in the Pokhran-II nuclear testing that India conducted in May 1998. Work for this testing had begun under Kalam, who was then an aerospace engineer. At the time of testings, he was the chief coordinator for the tests and Scientific Adviser to the prime minister and Head of the DRDO at this time. 

The testing was an extremely important and strategic one that helped India become a nuclear-armed state. 

 Presidency

APJ Abdul Kalam was the President of India from 2002 to 2007. He was referred as the “People’s President”. 

Awards and Honours Received

Dr. Kalam was also the recipient of the highly prestigious Bharat Ratna in 1997, and before that, he had received the Padma Bhushan in 1981 and Padma Vibhushan in 1990.  

His birthday, 15th October, is also celebrated as World Student’s Day.

  • My Hero Kalam- Untold Story of APJ (2018) 

The movie explores the untold story of our President and his journey to becoming one of the most acclaimed scientists in the world. 

  • I Am Kalam (2010)

Where a young boy is so inspired by Dr.Kalam that it is his dream to become a man like Dr. Kalam. 

Another movie ‘Dr. Abdul Kalam’ is said to be in the making and will chronicle the life of The Missile Man. 

Dr. Kalam was a humble and inspiring leader. He believed in the power of education and its ability to transform lives. He always encouraged young students to choose a career in science and technology as he believed that it could transform their lives and that of society and the country. He was a visionary who dedicated his life to the country, and his life serves as an inspiration.
