NEET PG-2023 Exam Qualification Percentile Decrease to Zero, Educationist Shocked
The Indian government has reduced the qualifying percentile for the NEET-PG-2023 exam to Zero, allowing all medical graduates to apply for admission to super speciality programs this year. This decision was made to ensure that no PG seats go vacant. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) and Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association (FORDA) encouraged the move, but the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) voices concern, highlighting the necessity to maintain merit-based admissions.
Before Thursday, general category aspirants had to get a score of at least 50% to be eligible for NEET PG counselling.

Simply put, this meant that aspirant medical students had to score higher than 50% of the applicants. Once qualified, individuals had a choice of seats in several departments depending on their cutoff scores and the number of seats available.
The relaxation now allows students with a zero percentile—those who received no marks on the exam—to enrol in postgraduate programs. As of yet, there has been no official announcement that this change will be a permanent feature. A greater number of aspirants are now eligible for seats – which in turn will ensure that most seats are filled. It will however make things harder for applicants who were waiting for allotment of seats in Round 3 as well as hinder those waiting for an upgrade in seat allotment.

While some people supported the decision, others, including politicians and medical organizations, have called it a “mockery of the healthcare system.” The Union Health Ministry’s choice follows demands from doctors all around the nation for the NEET-PG 2023 cut-off criteria to be lowered.
