On Independence Day, Dipa Karmakar took to twitter and shared a series of tweets about the recent event of  her exclusion from the Indian squad for the Asian Games 2023.

The gymnast, who just won the Asian Games trials in her event and achieved a historic fourth-place finish in the 2016 Olympics in Rio, was not included in the Indian squad because she did not meet the requirements. It was not possible in her situation because she was serving a two-year suspension for violating anti-doping laws.

Dipa underwent surgery to treat her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in 2017, however she missed the 2019 World Championships in Stuttgart due to a persistent knee issue that prevented her from competing in big events.

Dipa Karmakar Wrote on X, “On this #IndependenceDay, I’m using my right to freedom of speech to talk about recent events that have been extremely depressing and demoralizing. The #AsianGames2023, which I have been looking forward to for the past two years, appears more distant than they actually are. She added , ‘To my surprise, it appears that I won’t have the chance to compete in the @19thAGofficial despite winning the national trials and satisfying the @IndiaSports selection requirements.

Even worse, I have no idea why this decision was made and no official explanation has been provided.  Instead, I’m left to read about my fellow gymnasts’ and my exclusion from the Games in the news, and I’m not sure how to interpret it. The anxiety and utter quiet from @Media_SAI and @IndiaSports rarely reflect the uncertainty and sacrifice that go into preparation for important games. I only ask that the selection standards be used equally and consistently across all sports.’

Furthermore She added , ‘And request that the accurate information be given to us so that we won’t have to live in the dark.I aim to join @WeAreTeamIndia in Hangzhou next month. In the meantime, I owe it to my nation to maintain my preparation.’

Just two days ago Dipa’s coach Bisheshwar Nandi has also lashed out at Sports Authority of India (SAI).

According to official standards, athletes’ performance in individual competitions over the course of the previous 12 months shall not be less than that of the Asian Games’ eighth-place finisher in quantifiable sports.

In spite of not meeting the requirements, the Indian men’s football squad was allowed to travel thanks to intense pressure from IOA secretary-general and AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey. However, Dipa feels that simply winning the trials should have been enough to have her included.
