Look Who’s Talking! – Chit-Chat With Barun Sobti

Who said stardom cannot happen to everyone?

For every dreamy eyed person who wants just one chance to prove that they can do something, One World News has brought to you the story of Barun Sobti, who made his journey to the greener side of life from a call-centre in Delhi.

Having started with television four years back, Barun Sobti got the chance to stardom because of his friends who were working in the television industry, “They would keep telling me that I can give it a try as I look good, apparently that’s the only criteria you need to qualify as an actor. So, I got some shoots done and started to send them across a few people. I have done modeling too, along with working at the call center because I didn’t have enough courage and finances to leave the job and struggle.”

After a little time, my family’s status got better so that’s when I decided to do it. So I did audition for a show and luckily they liked it. Then went for the meeting, where I was offered the package which was the lowest in the television industry but manifolds of what I used to earn in the call centre.”

He took the chance and started his career as an actor. For 5 to 6 months, the show didn’t go on air so he was quite tensed as often shows would get cancelled even before going on-air. “It was a scary time but eventually the show did get aired but only for 3 months. However, it did open up doors for further projects, and since then I never looked back.”

Talking about if he ever thought about how even despite not being from an acting background, he managed to grab such a craze for himself, especially amongst women, Barun said, “Who expects that! We all believe in ourselves and when that belief gets multiplied with people’s belief on you then it is an amazing feeling. I used to think about things I could do when I wasn’t doing well in life but then now when I think about it I have the confidence that I can achieve everything.”

Barun feels that acting isn’t hard and it’s just about understanding the psychology of the character. “I was shooting for my serial and the upcoming movie, Main Aur Mr. Riight together. I would shoot for the serial in the day time and the movie during the evening and nights. I could manage everything but the only difficulty was the difference between the energy level of both the characters.

There was no time to sleep and I would be damn tired but then I had to accumulate the energy to do justice to the character. The director would never compromise and that’s the reason why the movie has come the way it has. “

Further, Barun spoke about how different the character of Arnav Raizada (Iss Pyar Ko Kya Naam Dun) and Sukhi Singh (Main Aur Mr. Riight) was, “I believe one has to study the grass-root behavioral characteristics to understand and delve into the character, but we cannot judge a person in accordance to that. Both the characters are quite righteous.

Arnav is a deep character who has reasons for everything wrong that he does and also his personality is so stiff because of his past experiences. He is a hard shell to crack, a snob but one who has a charming personality. Whereas, Sukhi is a happy go lucky person who is ill-spoken, ill mannered and loud. Sukhi is outspoken and in your face about whatever he has to say and whatever he feels.”

Barun feels that playing the character of Sukhi, for the first 15 minutes was the most difficult part because he is not like that but the script demanded the first impression to be created in a way that it shocks people about him as a person as well.

According to Barun, he is a person who is difficult to read and breakthrough, also shy, but if you manage to break the shell and be a part of his world, he can do anything for you.

On being asked if he would want to work for television again, he said, “I would refrain from doing daily soaps because I have had some bad experiences but then would love to work again in television because now people are coming up with good concepts. I don’t want to be at a stage where you are mentally blocked, doing the same thing every day.”

Barun further spoke on how his character is quite different to the character of Shehnaz but talking about his chemistry with her off-screen, he said “On-screen Shehnaaz is a casting director who wants everything to be perfect and I play a role of a wanna- be actor, but off-screen the relationship we share is entirely different. She is a mad parsi and I had an amazing time shooting with her.”

On being asked if he would like to give any message to the audience and to his fans (especially females) Barun ended the conversation by saying, “Don’t overrate yourself. However, that doesn’t mean that you don’t believe in yourself. It’s important to have faith in yourself and if you think you can do something then do it. If I a middle class Kirti Nagar boy can make it then anyone can. Also, I won’t force anyone to watch the movie but then do go and watch the trailers and if you like it then go for the movie. Give the entire crew and cast a chance.”
