Jugalbandiyan

An all-girl band came into fame at their launch event in The Park Hotel, New Delhi on 25th September, 2014.

The band consists of three talented singers trained under ParamjitSingh, a mentor of well-known singers like Daler Mehndi, Mika Singh, Sunidhi Chauhan and so on.

The name of the band is ‘Jugalbandiyan’ which comprises of three upcoming singers-Preeti, Shalu and Reshma. It’s possibly the first time in a decade that such a band has been seen on the Indian top firmament. While Preeti is fond of old songs of the golden era, Reshma has a Sufi and a semi-classical choice and Shalu likes pop and penny tracks.

One World News interacted with the three Jugalbandiyan who talked about the idea behind forming a band and other relevant topics:

• Why have you named the band as Jugalbandiyan?

Preeti: In the literal sense, Jugalbandiyan means mixing up of different styles and as we are singers of different genres, we thought Jugalbandiyuan is the appropriate name which we can give to our band.

• Why all girls and no guys?

Preeti: The band is an all-girl ensemble and has no space for men. The entire concept means stand for ‘Bandiyan’ and not ‘Bande’.

• What is the theme of your band?

Shalu: The theme of the band is to compose and sing songs in ‘Pure Entertainment Bollywood Style’.

• What is the message that you are trying to convey through an all-girls band?

Preeti: We are trying to prove that there is nothing which girls cannot do. And nothing can stop girls from fulfilling their aspirations. Even in Playback singing, male singers play a prominent role. In ours’, there is no scope for that as it’s an all-girls band.

• What are the challenges that you had to face in forming this band?

Reshma: Well, there were not many. Despite of being from different musical backgrounds, we have developed a close bonding and have also started taking interest in each other’s genres.

• Do you play instruments?

Preeti: Shalu plays few instruments while Reshma and I know how to play keyboards.

• Any plans to add more members to the group?

Preeti: We are looking for more singers but for the time being, we will continue as the three sole members of the band. As it is difficult to find female solo singers and instrument players in New Delhi but if we come across any, they are welcome to join us.
