World Maritime Day 2023: IMO Celebrates Half a Century of Marine Protection

The World Maritime Day 2023 is set to take place on September 28th, with this year’s theme being “MARPOL at 50 – Our commitment goes on.” This significant event, hosted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), holds great importance for the maritime industry worldwide.

Illuminating Landmarks

To symbolise this year’s theme, IMO Headquarters will be bathed in blue light in the evening, encouraging Member States, intergovernmental organisations, and NGOs associated with IMO to illuminate landmarks similarly.

Social Media Participation

In the age of digital connectivity, IMO invites all Member States and individuals within the maritime industry to celebrate World Maritime Day 2023 by using the hashtag #WorldMaritimeDay and tagging IMO on social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn.

MARPOL at 50 – Our commitment goes on

The central theme, “MARPOL at 50 – Our commitment goes on,” pays tribute to IMO’s enduring dedication to safeguarding the environment from the impact of shipping through a robust regulatory framework. This theme spotlights the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL), a cornerstone in preventing marine pollution.

The Impact of IMO’s Marine Protection Treaty

The MARPOL Convention, IMO’s primary international treaty, is pivotal in preventing marine pollution. It encompasses six technical Annexes, each contributing to the protection of our oceans.

Aligning with Sustainable Development Goals

This theme links IMO’s work to the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It underscores the importance of affordable and clean energy (SDG 7), industry, innovation, and infrastructure (SDG 9), climate action and sustainable marine resource use (SDGs 13 and 14), and the significance of partnerships (SDG 17).

IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim emphasised, “Our commitment to protecting and preserving the marine environment has remained unwavering. The World Maritime Theme for 2023 allows us to celebrate this legacy while moving towards a brighter future together.”

World Maritime Day 2023 serves as a pivotal moment to recognize the progress made in maritime environmental protection and to reaffirm our collective commitment to safeguarding our oceans for generations to come.
