A keto diet or Ketogenic diet has been discussed a lot of times. We hear this term every then and now. A lot of people in India are up for it. In fact, some of the Bollywood celebs swear by their keto diet and one of them is Alia Bhatt. If you also planning to begin a Keto diet, then first understand what is it?

What is the Keto diet?

It is a low carb and high – fat diet that can help you to burn the fats effectively. A lot of studies have shown that a keto diet can contribute a lot to weight loss. It has many health benefits too. Still, it remains a controversial topic. It can be very helpful for losing excess body fat without hunger and it can also improve type 2 diabetes.

What is low carb diet? Why do we need ketones

It is a very low –carb and very high-fat diet. It is similar in many ways to other low carb diets. You eat fewer carbohydrates and increase the intake of fats. It puts your body in a metabolic state called Ketosis where a lot of fat is burned for energy.

It comes from the fact that it allows the body to produce small molecules called ketones. When the blood sugar in the body is in short supply, this becomes an alternative way to get fuel sources for the body. The liver produces ketones, and these ketones then serve as fuel sources throughout the day, especially to the brain. A human brain consumes a lot of energy; it can only run on ketones or on glucose. Brain cannot directly run on fats.

When someone is on a ketogenic diet his or her entire body switches its fuel supply to run mostly on fat. It means burning fat 24×7. There are many other controversies any myths associated to the diet. But still, people recommend it for weight loss and other health benefits.

There are three important groups who should not go for the Keto diet:

1. People who are diabetic and take medicines on a regular basis.

2. Someone who is on medicines for high blood pressure

3. New moms who have to breastfeed their kids should not go for the Keto diet.
