Hindi Diwas is celebrated with full zeal and enthusiasm across the country every year to remember the historic occasion of Hindi. It is a celebrated yearly tribute to India’s mother tongue/language. Every year the President presents the Rajbhasha awards at Rashtrapati Bhawan. The Rajbhasha awards were instituted by the Department of Official Language of the Home Ministry to recognize the excellent contribution of Ministries, Departments, and Nationalized Banks in the field of Hindi.

How did Hindi Diwas come into existence? 

The Constitutional Assembly unanimously declared Hindi as the official language on 14 September 1949 and adopted Hindi in Devanagari Script as the official language of the union under Article (343) in 1950.

The Hindi language has travelled long to make its presence felt in the world. The Constitution of India legalised the decision to use the Hindi language as an official language of India on 26 January 1950. The Constituent Assembly of the country adopted the Hindi language as the official language of India.

Difference between World Hindi Day and Hindi Diwas

For the unversed, we celebrate Hindi at the global level as well as World Hindi Day on 10 January every year. World Hindi Day promotes the importance of Hindi at an international level, whereas Hindi Diwas ignite a sense of pride towards their language at the national level.

Facts related to the Hindi Language:-

    • The Hindi language in India has a long history which belongs to the Indo-Aryan branch of the Indo-European language family.
    • After becoming an independent country, the Government of India has made a goal to standardize the mother tongue means, Hindi language with the grammar and orthography.
    • Devanagari script is used to bring uniformity to writing.
    • Hindi is spoken in many other countries, including Mauritius, Pakistan, Surinam, Trinidad, and others.
    • It is spoken as a native language by 258 million people and is the 4th largest language worldwide.
    • It has roots in Sanskrit languages, going back to nearly 5,000 BC.
    • Hindi Divas is celebrated on 14 September because on this day in 1949, the country’s Constituent Assembly adopted the Hindi language.
    • The Assembly of India had adopted Hindi, written in Devanagari script, as the official language of the Republic of India.
    • Hindi became an official language in India in 1965.
    • At the state level, Hindi is the official language of the following Indian states: Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.

How India celebrates Hindi Diwas?  

This auspicious day is celebrated in schools, colleges, private offices, government offices, educational institutes, organisations, and other enterprises as Hindi Diwas, with various unique activities, programs, and competitions organized related to Hindi poems, story recitations, vocabulary quizzes, and many more.

Hindi diwas is an event that heartily allows Indian people to promote the Hindi language. It motivates and brings positive perceptions about Hindi among youths. So, we should celebrate Hindi Diwas with great enthusiasm every year by participating in various school, college, community, or social programs to feel the importance of the Hindi language heartily.

Hindi diwas celebration takes place all over the country, which marks the importance of our mother tongue and why we should take pride in speaking Hindi.

लोगों की आम धारणा होती है कि हिंदी क्या सीखना, कोई नई भाषा सीखी जाए। बेशक नई भाषा सीखने में बुराई नहीं है, लेकिन अपनी भाषा पर शर्म भी नहीं होना चाहिए।
