Can cold water training help in blood sugar control in diabetes? Let’s find out!

Blood sugar control in diabetes is a major concern. The prevalence of diabetes has been a global health concern. The levels of prevalence have been increasing globally, driven by factors such as urbanization, sedentary lifestyles, and unhealthy dietary patterns. Furthermore, it has a significant burden on healthcare systems due to its association with various complications, including cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, and neuropathy.

A new study found that cold water training and cinnamon supplements aid blood sugar control in diabetes

A very recent study with rats has given some shocking results. A combination of cold-water swimming and cinnamon supplements lowered blood glucose levels in rats with diabetes. This has sparked interest as people are now trying to understand if this can help people with diabetes control their blood sugar levels.

Cold Water Training

Cold exposure may activate certain physiological responses in the body, such as increased metabolism and improved insulin sensitivity. 

A 2015 study found that  10 days of cold acclimation (14–15 °C) increased peripheral insulin sensitivity by ∼43% in eight type 2 diabetes subjects. Cold exposure may be a potential therapy for diabetes by increasing brown adipose tissue (BAT) mass and activity. 

Cinnamon Supplements

Some studies have suggested that cinnamon may have potential benefits for blood sugar control. Cinnamon contains compounds that may mimic the action of insulin and improve glucose metabolism

A 2019 research titledThe Effect of Different Amounts of Cinnamon Consumption on Blood Glucose in Healthy Adult Individuals’  found that “ in particular a 3–6 g of cinnamon consumption was found to affect certain blood parameters of individuals positively.”

Though both these studies and some new findings show that cold water training and cinnamon might help with diabetes, there is a need for more comprehensive research. The need for a better lifestyle, exercise and eating healthy cannot be denied as the main treatment for diabetes.
