What is escapism in children? How to deal with it?

How to handle your children who are going through escapism?

The basic meaning of escapism is a way of distracting oneself from any unpleasant or difficult reality. Generally, the tendencies of escapism are there in all of us and it is mostly believed that through this we are protecting ourselves from facing reality. But in children, escapism sometimes comes on its own and through this, they start daydreaming which is not completely wrong. Daydreaming and escapism in children is definitely an alarming sign that your child isn’t getting the stimulation needed to focus on learning but also a sign of brilliance which can help your child’s social-emotional development and creativity. Ever wondered why your children are often not fully concentrated? Why do they tend to escape from the external reality? Parents must do the introspection through their behavioral analysis of what is their reaction to the current events and happenings. In this pandemic, when children are being kept at home, it is natural to have a tendency to escape.

There are some signs that why your children are daydreaming and escapism:

1. Please check whether your children are spending most of the time alone talking to imaginary people and have no friends in real life.

2. Your children are spending time alone and doing their own imaginary creative oriented stuff like – drawing, singing, dancing, inventing new things, writing something, etc.

3. Notice your child’s body language when they are smiling alone, crying alone, suddenly coming up with creative facial expressions looking oneself into the mirror, and speaking in a different style.

4. You need to avoid fights and arguments with your partner because this often makes children escape from the current reality and thus they create a delusion for themselves where they are calm and happy.

5. Please check If your child is not present in a family gathering and his behavior is harming personal relationships.

If your child is also going through escapism, handle it in these 5 ways:

1. Set aside time for children’s recreation: When you give separate time to children for recreation, they will not be daydreaming in their productive time. Watch movies with the kids, take them out, and tell good stories too. When the child knows that he has a lot of time for recreation, he will focus on his work better.

2. Don’t dismiss the child’s talk: If children tell you something about their daydreaming, don’t dismiss their words immediately, no matter how unrealistic their expectations may be. Explain their daydreaming to the child comfortably and lovingly so that they do not expect too much from the world.

3. Let your children read Books: Allow children to read all kinds of fiction and non-fiction books. This will not only increase their knowledge but they will also be able to improve their daydreaming habit. In this pandemic, no one can help a child better than Books for Escapism. So keep the child as close to the books as possible.

4. Do not fight with your partner in front of the child: Sometimes children also shift towards daydreaming and escapism because they see their parents fighting. In such a situation, in an attempt to make their life delusional and happy, children start daydreaming. Therefore, do not fight with your partner in front of the child so that the child does not have insurance.

5. Observe Children’s Body Language: When children are daydreaming, their body language also makes a big difference. So observe your child’s behavior. Keep in mind that if your child is not feeling alone or he is not very conscious about himself. If so, talk to the child.
