Half the world’s population to be shortsighted by 2050

It is expected that the number with vision loss due to high myopia increased seven times from 2000-2050, with myopia to become the leading cause of permanent blindness worldwide, the researchers said.

The results point to an important public health problem, the researchers suggest that the planning of eye care services are required to manage the rapid increase in high myopia (an increase of five times since 2000), along with the development treatment to control the progression of myopia and prevent people from becoming too myopic.

These strategies can include more time outdoors and less time spent on activities based around including electronic devices that require constant focus closely.
