Jagdeep Dhankhar, former Bengal Governor, was elected as the Vice President. He bested the opposition’s Margaret Alva to emerge a winner. The BJP-led NDA candidate won the election comfortably with 528 votes against Ms. Alva’s 182.

The vice president is also the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. Mr. Dhankhar secured 74.36%. He has the highest winning margin in the last 6 vice presidential elections held since 1997.

Mr. Dhankhar will be the 2nd vice president from Rajasthan after Bhairon Singh Shekhawat who held the office between 2002 and 2007.

Joyous scenes were also reported from Rajasthan’s Jhunjhunu, the hometown of Mr. Dhankhar.

Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan

Appointed as India’s first vice-president in 1952 of India. This philosopher, scholar, and politician had authored many books and was nominated for the Nobel Prize 27 times.

His birth anniversary on 5 September is celebrated every year as Teacher’s Day. He was also the 2nd president of India.

Zakhir Husain

An economist and politician, Zakhir Husain was appointed as vice president of India in 1662. He was the first Muslim president to honour the post. Zakhir Husain was also the founder of Jamia Millia Islamia University.

V.V Giri

Varanhagiri Vanakata Giri also known as VV Giri. He was the vice president and took over as an acting president in 1969 after the death of Zakhir Husain.

Gopal Swarup Pathak

Served as vice-president from 1969-1974, Gopal Swarup Pathak was also the judge of Allahabad High court.

B D Jatti

Basappa Danappa Jatti, former chief minister of Mysore. Shri Jatti has to his credit several articles on literature, philosophy, and allied subjects. He was appointed as vice president in 1974.

Mohammad Hidayatullah

Mohammad Hidayatullah was a lawyer, politician, and academician. On the other hand, he was an eminent scholar, educationist, jurist, author, and linguist as well.

On the professional front, Hidayatullah was the Chief Justice of India and the 6th Vice president of India.

Being the Chief Justice, he had also served as the acting president of India as both the positions of president and the vice president were vacant.

Ramaswamy Venkataraman

Ramaswamy Venkataraman was the 7th vice president from 1984-87 and the 8th president of India from 1987-1992. He worked with four prime ministers during his tenure.

Shankar Dayal Sharma

The Chief Minister of Bhopal was appointed as vice president of India in 1987 -92 and later became the 9th president of India. Moreover, the International Bar Association presented Sharma with the Living Legends of Law Award of Recognition.

K. R. Narayanan

Narayanan had briefly worked with The Times of India and The Hindu in New Delhi between 1944-45. He also taught at the Delhi School of Economics and was the vice-chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University in 1979. In 1992 he became vice president and later president of India.

Krishan Kant

Krishan Kant was an Indian politician who served as the tenth vice president of India from 1997 until his death. Formerly, he was the governor of Andhra Pradesh.

Bhairon Singh Shekhawat

Bhairon Singh Shekhawat served as a Vice President from August 19, 2002, to July 21, 2007, and was elected 3 times as chief minister of Rajasthan.

Mohammad Hamid Ansari

As India’s 14 Vice-President between 2007 to 2017, Mohammed Hamid Ansari was the only person after Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan to get a second term. He became known for his role in ensuring compensation to the victims of communal riots in Gujarat state in 2002.
