6.4 Magnitude Earthquake in Nepal: 128 Lives Lost, PM Modi Offers Support
The recent earthquake in Nepal, with a magnitude of 6.4, has tragically claimed the lives of 128 people and left more than 140 individuals injured in the Jajarkot and Rukum districts of Western Nepal. The epicenter of the earthquake was located in the Lamidanda area of Jajarkot, as reported by the National Earthquake Measurement Centre
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his deep sorrow over the loss of lives and the destruction caused by this natural disaster in Nepal. He conveyed India’s solidarity with the people of Nepal and offered assistance, extending his thoughts to the grieving families and wishing a speedy recovery for the injured.
Prachanda Leads Relief Efforts
Nepal’s Prime Minister, Pushpa Kamal Dahal, has mobilized all three security agencies within the country to provide immediate rescue and relief to the injured. Prime Minister Dahal, often referred to as ‘Prachanda,’ also visited the earthquake-affected areas of the country to assess the situation.
Reports of injuries and property damage have emerged from other districts, including Dailekh, Salyan, and Rolpa. The injured are receiving treatment at a hospital in Jajarkot, which is situated approximately 500 kilometres west of Kathmandu.
Nepal’s Frequent Quakes
It’s important to note that Nepal frequently experiences earthquakes due to its location in the Himalayan region. This recent event is a grim reminder of the earthquake that struck in November 2022, claiming six lives in the Doti district. Nepal had previously endured a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake in 2015, resulting in the loss of over 12,000 lives and significant damage to countless structures across the country.
