The Big Question Remains Unanswered: Who Is Responsible For The Odisha Train Accident?

The Balasore train accident is huge- probably one of the worst accidents for the Railway Ministry in India. But, the big question about the accident remains unanswered- Who is responsible for the Odisha train accident?

What is the Odisha train accident?

On 2nd June 2023 three trains collided in the Balasore district in Odisha. The 12814 Shalimar-MGR Chennai Central Coromonadel Express collided with a goods train and that in turn derailed the 12864 SMVT Bengaluru- Howrah SF Express.

Till now more than 280 people have been reported dead and more than 1100 have been injured.

This is being termed the deadliest railway crash since the 1995 Firozabad rail disaster.

What caused the accident?

The investigation is still on to ascertain the cause of the accident. The probe is being carried out by CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) and this is what is what you should know about it-

  1. Dinesh Trivedi, the former Railway Minister believe that the accident was the result of a sabotage. He said – “The inputs and understanding I have about the interlocking system, its functioning, and what happened in the incident, I felt that there was a serious manipulation which led the Coromandel Express on the loop line from the main track. Now with more findings coming up, I am more than 100 percent sure that this crash was caused by sabotage and not a mere accident.”
  2. There was a change in the configuration of the track that led to the derailment and accident and this could have been a deliberate attempt by someone.
  3. “Manual tinkering” was done that caused the train to derail.
  4.  According to PTI, a railway officer said “Unless there is deliberate interference in the system, it is impossible that a route set for the main line is switched to the loop line.”
  5. It is also being said that the location box (which sends signals to trains) is what was tampered with.

The investigation by the CBI is still on and there is no concrete evidence that has been declared by them. It remains to be seen what and who is responsible for the accident. If there was human interference, it becomes huger than it already is and the Government will also have to work hard to understand Why the accident was caused.
