The Film is based on Mafia Queens of Mumbai

The film is based on author and journalist Hussain Zaidi’s book Mafia Queens of Mumbai. Gangubai was originally Ganga Harjeevandas and she was born in the village of Kathiawad, Gujarat, sometime in the 1940s. At a young age, she decided to marry her father’s accountant. They ran away from their village and arrived in Mumbai. Ramnik Laal, Gangubai’s husband sold her into prostitution for ₹ 500. According to the book, she gave up her original name at this point and became Gangubai. She started as a sex worker in Kamathipura and went on to own several brothels in Kamathipura. She also won the local Gharwali elections to become a brothel madam at a young age.

Notably, she had a rough beginning, but Gangubai rose through the ranks, she was helped by Karim Lala one of the famous mafia dons of Mumbai. As per Hussain Zaidi, Gangubai had tied rakhi on his wrist as he promised to save her from one of his goons who had raped Gangubai twice.

Why Alia is the best choice for this film?

Author Hussain Zaidi explained Gangubai as a small woman, just a five –feet tall woman, who enjoyed huge respect in Kamathipura. Keeping in mind Gangubai’s physical appearance, Alia aptly fits the role. Apart from it, there are several other reasons which make Alia the apt choice for the role.  Alia made her Bollywood debut in 2012 with the film Student of the Year.  Soon after Student of the Year, she starred in Highway and left everyone awestruck with her powerful performance. She surprised everyone in Highway, and for the first time, she showed her versatility as an actor. After that, there was no looking back. Over the years, her film choices have proved that she is here to stay and slay. Be it Raazi, Dear Zindagi, Gully Boy or Gangubai, Alia has proved her mettle as an actor. It wouldn’t be wrong to say she is one of the finest actors Bollywood has right now. Alia Bhatt is indeed an inspiration for Gen Z actors.

Working with Sanjay Leela Bhansali is a dream for many actors

Sanjay Leela Bhansali is a brand in itself. After a blockbuster Padmavaat, Sanjay Leela Bhansali is back with Gangubai. The film is slated to release on July 30, 2021. Working with him is like a dream come true for many actors.  He is known for his love for perfection. Sanjay Leela Bhansali has created some masterpieces such as – Devdas, Bajirao Mastani, Ram Leela, and Padmavaat to name a few. Actress Deepika Padukone has worked with him thrice. During an interview with Anupama Chopra, she shared her experience with the veteran film director. Deepika admitted one can learn a lot from him, but meeting his expectation surely a difficult task.  In that case, we know Alia must have worked really hard to meet Bhansali’s expectations. Gangubai is Alia and Bhansali’s first collaboration and after watching the teaser, we look forward to many more collaborations come in future.  Notably, Alia was supposed to work in Insallah along with Salman Khan, which was again a Sanjay Bhansali film. Sadly, the film is not happening now.  But Alia and Sanjay have joined hands for Gangubai and we are excited AF.

Priyanka Chopra and Rani Mukherjee were the first choices for Gangubai, not Alia Bhatt

As per reports, Alia Bhatt was not the first choice for Gangubai. Sanjay Leela Bhansali was considering Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Rani Mukherjee for this role. But as they say, everything happens for reason. Things didn’t work out with both of them and Alia got this film added to her kitty. She is getting a lot of applause from her fans and colleagues.  After watching the teaser, all we can say is, Alia is at her best!
