10 K-Dramas: Fierce Female Leads You Can’t Miss

K-dramas offer a diverse range of narratives, but all are united by their portrayal of women who are not just supporting characters, but powerful forces driving the story forward, inspiring audiences with their courage, intellect, and unwavering spirit.

10 Must-Watch K-Dramas Featuring Bold and Strong Female Leads

K-dramas have transitioned from the old idea of damsel in distress to having main female characters who are strong, well developed and full of character. They lead the stories, challenge established traditions and illustrate toughness, clear thinking and persistence.

1. Yoon Se-ri (Son Ye-jin) is the CEO of a South Korean company who gets caught up in North Korea after surviving a paragliding accident in Crash Landing on You (2019). Even in grave danger, Se-ri uses her business mind, sense of humor and tough independence to fit into a strange place and appeal to and tease others.

2. In Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo (2016), Lee Sung-kyung does a wonderful job playing Kim Bok-joo, a gymnast with plenty of ambition and a straightforward attitude. It represents a young woman loving something not many women do, working on her appearance and enjoying her first love with a lovable honesty.

3. In Strong Woman Do Bong-soon, actress Park Bo-young’s character, Do Bong-soon, is literally the strongest of the female leads. She hides her superpower, choosing instead to use it to defend disadvantaged people she meets, as well as her friend and love. Trying to keep her skills in control, she still aims to be a game developer while confronting true dangers. Her character brings together a lovable personality and outstanding physical abilities.

4. Through her role as Ko Moon-young, Seo Ye-ji shines in It’s Okay to Not Be Okay as a popular writer with antisocial behavior and a hard-to-overlook past.

5. Hotel Del Luna tells the story of Jang Man-wol (played by IU), a ghost who has spent centuries managing a hotel for the afterlife. Man-wol appears sophisticated, fickle and indifferent, but this is hiding much more than that.

6. Vincenzo (2021): Hong Cha-young, played by Jeon Yeo-been, is a sharp, unorthodox, somewhat amoral lawyer who is metamorphosed into a terrible force for justice. She is smarter than everyone else in the room, braver than anyone she knows, and is not above bending the law to get what she wants. The dynamic duo she forms with Vincenzo Cassano puts her quick-witted mind and her stubborn loyalty to her beliefs on full display, making her an interesting character.

7. Mr Sunshine (2018): Kim Tae-ri plays Go Ae-shin, a noblewoman who secretly trains as a sharpshooter to fight for Korea’s independence at the close of the 19th century. Ae-shin is courageous and convinced and clever as she maneuvers through political chaos and personal sacrifice.

8) Search: WWW (2019): This great drama has not only one, but three strong female leads: Bae Ta-mi (Im Soo-jung), Cha Hyun (Lee Da-hee), and Song Ga-kyung (Jeon Hye-jin). They’re each accomplished professionals in the competitive world of IT portals, ironically pursuing happiness while navigating corporate politics, power plays, and the complexities of personal existence.

9) My Name (2021): Han So-hee again morphs into Yoon Ji-woo, a young woman who becomes involved in a crime syndicate to take revenge for her father’s murder. Ji-woo becomes intensely trained physically to face a series of brutal challenges, all of which she can bear with an incredible level of resilience, determination, and fighting skills.

10) Reply 1988 (2015): The drama focuses on the ensemble cast; nonetheless, Sung Deok-sun (Lee Hye-ri) is a wonderfully relatable, and strong, female lead. She exemplifies kindness, compassion, and loyalty to her family. Her strengths are the emotional intelligence she uses to mediate conflicts, as well as her emotional support for her family and friends.
