UPI Transactions Hit Record in October 2026: Digital Payments Reach ₹31.53 Lakh Crore as Average Daily Transaction Value Crosses ₹1 Lakh Crore for the First Time
India’s digital payment ecosystem has achieved another major milestone as UPI Transactions Hit Record levels in October 2026. The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) processed transactions worth an impressive ₹31.53 lakh crore during the month, while its average daily transaction value crossed ₹1 lakh crore for the first time. According to data released by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the platform recorded 25.47 billion transactions in October, reflecting the growing popularity of digital payments across the country. Increased festive shopping, online purchases and everyday spending contributed to the surge, highlighting how UPI has become an important part of India’s financial ecosystem.
UPI Transactions Hit Record ₹31.53 Lakh Crore in October 2026
October proved to be a historic month for India’s digital payments industry. UPI recorded a total transaction value of ₹31.53 lakh crore, marking its highest monthly figure since the platform was introduced.
According to NPCI data, the previous monthly record stood at approximately ₹29.90 lakh crore, recorded in May 2026. October became the first month when UPI transactions crossed the ₹30 lakh crore milestone.
The latest performance reflects the increasing use of instant digital payments for everything from small grocery purchases to expensive electronic products and online shopping.
The figures also demonstrate how consumers and businesses are increasingly choosing convenient payment options instead of relying entirely on cash.
Average Daily UPI Transaction Value Crosses ₹1 Lakh Crore
One of the biggest highlights of October’s performance was the average daily transaction value crossing ₹1 lakh crore for the first time.
UPI processed an average of approximately ₹1,01,707 crore in transactions every day during October. This was higher than the September average of ₹97,913 crore.
The daily transaction count also increased from approximately 802 million in September to 822 million in October.
This improvement indicates that the growth was not simply the result of October having 31 days. Average daily payment activity also increased, demonstrating stronger adoption and usage of the platform.
UPI Processes 25.47 Billion Transactions in October
Along with transaction value, UPI also achieved a new record in the total number of payments processed.
The platform handled 25.47 billion transactions during October, compared with approximately 24.07 billion transactions in September.
On a year-on-year basis, transaction volume increased by 23%, while the total transaction value grew by 16%.
The figures highlight the growing importance of UPI in India’s financial system. From neighbourhood shops and street vendors to restaurants, shopping centres and e-commerce platforms, digital payments are becoming increasingly common.
The ability to transfer money instantly using a smartphone has made everyday financial transactions easier for millions of people.
Festive Season Shopping Boosts Digital Payment Activity
The festive season played an important role in increasing UPI transactions during October.
Major festivals and shopping events encouraged consumers to spend more on clothing, electronics, groceries, jewellery, home appliances and other products.
Online shopping platforms also organised festive sales, attracting customers looking for discounts and special offers.
In addition to shopping, UPI was widely used for restaurant bills, travel bookings, food deliveries and regular household purchases.
October’s transaction growth therefore reflects both festive spending and the continued use of digital payments for everyday financial activities.
UPI’s Growth Highlights India’s Digital Payment Revolution
Over the past few years, UPI has transformed how people transfer money and make payments in India.
Earlier, cash was the preferred option for many small purchases. Today, customers can simply scan a QR code and complete payments within seconds.

UPI has also made digital payments more accessible to small businesses, street vendors, local retailers and service providers.
Its growing adoption has helped connect consumers, merchants and financial institutions through a common digital payment infrastructure.
The platform’s expansion also reflects India’s broader push towards digital financial inclusion and technology-driven banking services.
What About Merchant Discount Rate Charges on UPI Payments?
The record transaction figures have emerged amid discussions about the proposed Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) framework for selected UPI merchant transactions.
MDR refers to the fee charged for processing digital payments. The proposed framework involves a 0.4% charge on certain eligible person-to-merchant transactions exceeding ₹2,000, subject to applicable conditions and exemptions.
However, the implementation was deferred until after Diwali following requests from merchant associations, fintech companies and payment service providers.
The proposed changes have attracted attention because merchants and payment companies are concerned about how additional transaction costs could affect digital payment adoption.

What Does the UPI Record Mean for India’s Economy?
The latest UPI figures highlight the increasing role of digital payments in India’s economy.
Higher transaction volumes indicate that consumers are becoming more comfortable using digital platforms for regular purchases and financial transfers.
For businesses, digital payments can simplify collections, reduce dependence on physical cash and make transaction records easier to maintain.
The continued expansion of UPI may also encourage further innovation in fintech services, banking technology and merchant payment solutions.
However, maintaining cybersecurity, preventing digital fraud and ensuring reliable payment infrastructure will remain important as transaction volumes increase.
Conclusion: UPI Transactions Hit Record as Digital Payments Reach a New Milestone
The latest figures show that UPI Transactions Hit Record levels in October 2026, with the monthly transaction value reaching ₹31.53 lakh crore and the average daily value crossing ₹1 lakh crore for the first time.
