SC Halts ED Probe: Chhattisgarh Liquor Scam

The SC ordered a temporary halt to the Enforcement Directorate's probe in the Chhattisgarh Liquor Scam case. Various petitions, including one challenging the PMLA and another alleging corruption, were considered. Assets acquired illegally were discovered during the ED's search operations.

Supreme Court Halts Chhattisgarh Liquor Scam Probe by Enforcement Directorate.


The Supreme Court’s bench of justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Sudhanshu Dhulia issued oral remarks to the Enforcement Directorate, ordering a temporary halt to coercive actions in the Chhattisgarh Liquor Scam money laundering case. The court considered various petitions, including those of Anil and Yash Tuteja, and directed the agency not to proceed against the petitioners during the ongoing case hearings.

Challenging PMLA & Liquor Scam :

In one petition, IAS Anil Tuteja and his son Yash Tuteja challenged the vires of certain sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, stating that they violate constitutional rights. Another plea was filed by Karishma and Anwar Dhebar, alleging corruption and irregularities in the Chhattisgarh liquor system between 2019 and 2022.

Liquor Scam Exposed:

The Enforcement Directorate’s investigation revealed that Arun Pati Tripathi, with the involvement of Anwar Dhebar, corrupted the liquor system to maximize corruption in the department. Policy changes and tenders were manipulated to benefit associates, leading to significant financial losses to the State Exchequer.

The Enforcement Directorate conducted search operations and discovered assets acquired through illegal means. Cash, incriminating documents, unaccounted investments, and frozen fixed deposits were seized during the investigations.

The court’s decision came as a temporary measure to halt any coercive actions against the petitioners while the case is being heard and evaluated.
