Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar has been bestowed the honor of being recognized as a ‘national icon’ by the Election Commission (EC), with the aim of catalyzing increased voter participation in the electoral process. The formal agreement was signed for a duration of three years during a ceremony in New Delhi, in the presence of Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar.
Under the terms of the three-year collaboration, Tendulkar will actively engage in spreading voter awareness, effectively utilizing his widespread influence and popularity. The key objective of this partnership is to address the prevalent challenges of voter apathy, particularly among the urban population and the youth demographic.
The EC envisions this collaboration as a pivotal stride towards harnessing Tendulkar’s unparalleled impact, particularly among the youth, to bolster voter participation in forthcoming elections, most notably the 2024 general elections for the Lok Sabha. This strategic effort is in line with the EC’s broader strategy of leveraging notable personalities as ‘national icons’ to galvanize citizens’ active involvement in the electoral process.
In recent years, the Election Commission has consistently sought to engage with well-respected figures from diverse domains to serve as national icons. These iconic figures play a crucial role in inspiring and motivating citizens to actively exercise their voting rights. Among the notable individuals who have previously held the title of EC’s ‘national icons’ are actor Pankaj Tripathi, cricket stalwart MS Dhoni, acclaimed actor Aamir Khan, and Olympic champion Mary Kom.
Through this latest collaboration with Sachin Tendulkar, the EC aims to tap into his immense influence, channeling it towards the noble cause of fostering greater civic engagement and encouraging every eligible citizen to exercise their valuable right to vote.
