NPP-BJP alliance in Meghalaya draws ire from Congress

NPP-BJP alliance in Meghalaya indicates the Underlying Corruption: Congress

The NPP-BJP alliance in Meghalaya has ventured to form government as two major regional parties – the United Democratic Party (UDP) and the People’s Democratic Front (PDF) – extended their support to the alliance today, increasing the number of MLAs backing the Conrad K Sangma-led coalition to 43.

In the state of Meghalaya, the NPP-led alliance, with 45 MLAs in its support including two of the BJP, has staked claim to form government.

In the February 27 elections, NPP head Conrad K Sangma, whose party won 26 seats, will take oath as the chief minister on Tuesday, along with other cabinet ministers.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was also a part of the oath-taking ceremony of the new Meghalaya Chief Minister in Shillong. NPP leader Conrad Sangma took oath as Chief Minister of the state for his second term. It is expected that later this week, PM Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah will attend all the three upcoming ceremonies.

Conrad Sangma, Meghalaya Chief Minister and Nation People’s Party (NPP) supremo has looked forward to Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s blessings to form the next government in the hill state, Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam Chief Minister said on Thursday.

Sarma took to Twitter to also say that BJP president J P Nadda has suggested the Meghalaya unit of the saffron camp to aid the NPP as it forms the next government in the neighbouring state.

“Sri @SangmaConrad , Chief Minister of Meghalaya, called @AmitShah ji, Hon’ble Home Minister, and sought his support and blessings in forming the new Government,” Sarma wrote.

However, this NPP-BJP coalition did not go well with the Congress. The Congress on Monday censured the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for rushing to support a government led by National People’s Party (NPP) chief Conrad Sangma in Meghalaya, saying not long before the BJP considered the NPP-led government as the “most corrupt” in the run-up to the election and now was joining hands with it “in a fit of amnesia”.

“When the PM, Home Minister Amit Shah, and BJP president JP Nadda came to Meghalaya, they all accused and abused the NPP. But after the results when the BJP got only two out of the 60 seats, then the next day they joined together. This is how the BJP fool the people of India and Meghalaya,” said the Meghalaya Congress chief Vincent H Pala at a news conference in Delhi on Monday.

Apart from it, the coalition also drew indignation from two MLAs of the HSPDP. HSPDP MLA Methodius Dkhar’s office in Shillong was set on fire allegedly by members of his own party as he supported the NPP-BJP alliance, senior NPP leader Prestone Tynsong said on Saturday. The HSPDP decided to form an alliance with the TMC and Congress, but its two MLAs went ahead and supported the NPP-BJP coalition.

Tynsong advised that the aggressors indulging in such incidents must respect the people’s approval. He found the Hynniewtrep Integrated Territorial Organisation (HITO) and the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) guilty for it.

Recent speeches delivered by top BJP leaders during the Meghalaya election campaign where they blamed the Sangma-led government of corruption and nepotism were also shared by the Congress.
