International Women’s Day 2023: Celebrating the Spirit of Every Woman

International Women’s Day 2023: History and Significance of this day

It is March already! It’s a month that celebrates the spirit of women all across the globe. International Women’s Day 2023 is around the corner. Well, a woman is a personification of love, strength and beauty; she should be celebrated every day. But to acknowledge her incredible contribution to society, 8th March is celebrated as International Women’s Day.

The day is celebrated to make women aware of their rights and gender equality. The story of celebrating Women’s Day on March 8th dates back to 1917 after women gained suffrage in Soviet Russia. In the year 1967, it was adopted by the feminist movement. Later in the year 1977, the United Nations recognized the day and started celebrating it as International Women’s Day.

Women’s Day is all about embracing womanhood

Women’s Day is all about celebrating the spirit of every woman. She is complete in every aspect and she should be celebrated every day. A woman can be a successful entrepreneur or a multitasking homemaker, let us celebrate the incredible contribution that they make to our life.

Often marriage and motherhood are considered the most important part of a woman’s life. There are a lot of stigmas attached to a woman who chooses not to or cannot become a mother. A lot of emotional trauma comes with it and our so-called judgmental society judges without realizing how it can impact a woman. A woman is always held hostage by the expectations of society: skinny, fat, dark, fair or short, bold, meek, fertile or infertile. A woman can achieve anything, but the patriarchal society won’t celebrate success until you bear a child. But guess what? Things are slowly improving in our society and that’s a piece of good news!

A Prega news advertisement featuring Mona Singh went viral. The ad named #Sheiscompleteinherself shows Lata, a dutiful daughter–in–law, getting happy for her pregnant sister–in–law. However, casts of infertility shadow over happiness. As the ad progresses, it shows Lata is a teacher, a doting daughter–in–law, a support to her sister –in –law and happy go lucky family member and most importantly a human. Irrespective of being unable to conceive, she is complete in herself. The beautiful lines of the ad touched our hearts. The message is strong yet simple; every woman is complete in herself.

The advertisement gave some important insights into the current situation in India:

The description of the advertisement gave some important highlights. Infertility affects every 1 in 6 couples in India and the circumstances around them make them suffer in silence. This women’s day, let us speak about infertility. Let us celebrate every woman who she is.

Conclusion

A woman isn’t incomplete without a man or children. Her undying spirit of spreading love and warmth should be celebrated every day. March 8th is just a gentle reminder, not just for men, but for women themselves that you are complete in yourself and no one else is needed. The more you practice self-love, the more you will enjoy your company. This women’s day, let us all pledge to treat every woman with respect irrespective of her choices. Motherhood doesn’t complete her. Indeed, becoming a mother is the most beautiful feeling in the world, but she shouldn’t be fed with guilt and shame if she can’t.

Happy Women’s Day to all the beautiful and talented women out there. Celebrate yourself every day. This is Women’s Week; do not forget to do things that make you feel happy; be it catching up with your old friends, taking off from work or just cooking good food for yourself. Do not forget to put yourself first.
